Mumbai, Aug 27: Indian equity benchmarks traded subdued after a higher open on Thursday, amid a stronger-than-expected earnings print from Nvidia and further easing in crude prices. The gains were capped by a hotter-than-expected US inflation reading overnight that pulled Wall Street lower and tempered the risk appetite Nvidia’s numbers might otherwise have unleashed. Sentiment on Dalal Street reflected this tug-of-war.

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) beat estimates on both revenue and earnings, reporting $96.22 billion in quarterly revenue against a $92.17 billion estimate and adjusted earnings of $2.22 a share versus $2.10 expected, sending the stock up around four per cent in after hours trade on bullish next-year guidance. Brent crude eased further to near $87 a barrel and WTI held below $82, as Iran and Oman continued negotiating a Hormuz accord without a final agreement, keeping a lid on the geopolitical risk premium even with the deal unfinished.

The BSE Sensex was trading at 77,532.19, up 59.25 points, or 0.08 per cent, while the NSE Nifty 50 stood at 24,241.30, up 33.55 points, or 0.14 per cent, as of 9:21 am. Both benchmarks held on to only modest opening gains, caught between Nvidia’s strong earnings and softer oil on one side and the hotter US inflation print on the other.

Gainers and Losers

Among Nifty 50 constituents, Bajaj Finance (BAJFINANCE) led gainers, up 1.58 per cent to an LTP of Rs 1,102.10 from Rs 1,085, followed by Sun Pharma (SUNPHARMA), up 1.23 per cent to Rs 1,922.80 from Rs 1,899.50, Eternal (ETERNAL), up 1.07 per cent to Rs 330.50 from Rs 327, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV), up 1.05 per cent to Rs 316.40 from Rs 313.10, and Cipla (CIPLA), up one per cent to Rs 1,416.70 from Rs 1,402.70. On the losing side, HDFC Bank (HDFCBANK) fell 0.6 per cent to Rs 722.85 from Rs 727.20, Power Grid (POWERGRID) declined 0.49 per cent to Rs 263.90 from Rs 265.20, Grasim (GRASIM) slipped 0.42 per cent to Rs 3,286 from Rs 3,299.90, InterGlobe Aviation (INDIGO) eased 0.34 per cent to Rs 5,232.50 from Rs 5,250.50, and HCLTech (HCLTECH) dipped 0.18 per cent to Rs 1,296.10 from Rs 1,298.50.

Broad Market and Sectoral Indices

Broad market gauges were uniformly higher, with the Nifty Midcap Select up 0.50 per cent, the Nifty Smallcap 100 up 0.31 per cent and the headline Nifty 50 up 0.36 per cent. Sectoral indices were also firm, led by Nifty IT, up 0.80 per cent, and Nifty Healthcare and Nifty Pharma, both up around 0.6 per cent, while Nifty Realty, Nifty Cement and Nifty Chemicals lagged with marginal gains of 0.09 per cent, 0.02 per cent and 0.05 per cent.

Iran War

Iran and Oman are still working out the details of an agreement on the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian source told Reuters, even after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the two sides had agreed on sharing the waterway and its revenues. Tehran maintains the strait will not fully reopen unless Washington lifts its blockade on Iranian ports, pays compensation and removes sanctions, terms tied to a June ceasefire framework that later collapsed. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told allies Washington does not expect to launch new strikes against Iran for now and will rely on other forms of pressure, Axios reported. Attacks on shipping through the strait continue even as active hostilities have largely subsided, keeping passage perilous.

Asian Markets

Asian markets were broadly higher on Thursday morning, with investors cheering Nvidia’s results even as they weighed the still-unresolved Iran-Oman talks. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Japan’s Nikkei 225 both firmed in early trade, while Shanghai’s Composite also edged higher. Sentiment held up despite a softer Wall Street lead, with investors treating Nvidia’s beat as the more relevant signal for regional tech stocks.

US Markets

US markets ended lower on Wednesday after data showed the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, the PCE index, rose 3.7 per cent annually in July, hotter than the 3.6 per cent expected. The Dow fell 113.52 points, or 0.21 per cent, to 53,463.88, the S&P 500 slipped to 7,675.70 and the Nasdaq eased to 26,130.20. The hotter reading complicated the case for near-term Fed rate cuts, offsetting the optimism from Nvidia’s results, released after the bell.

Oil Prices

Brent crude was trading near $87.05 a barrel, down about 0.9 per cent, while WTI slipped 0.84 per cent to $81.56, extending its retreat. Prices have eased as Iran and Oman edge toward a Hormuz framework, even though the unfinalised accord and continuing shipping attacks have kept a floor under the market. Murban crude, the Abu Dhabi benchmark, bucked the trend, rising 0.35 per cent to $93.77.

How Indian Markets Ended on Wednesday

Indian benchmarks ended lower on Wednesday, with the Sensex falling 183.15 points, or 0.24 per cent, to 77,472.94 and the Nifty 50 declining 126.80 points, or 0.52 per cent, to 24,207.75, as selling in IT and infrastructure stocks outweighed gains in metals and banks. The Nifty IT and Infrastructure indices each fell around one per cent, dragged by Infosys and Tech Mahindra, while the Nifty Metal and private bank indices rose about one per cent on strength in JSW Steel and Axis Bank. Market breadth stayed positive even so, with 2,263 stocks advancing against 1,881 declines on the NSE, and the Nifty Smallcap index up 0.8 per cent even as the headline gauges slipped.
