Mumbai, Oct 1: Stock exchanges BSE and NSE will remain closed on Friday, October 2, 2026. Markets will be closed on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, which marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. All segments, including equity and equity derivatives, will remain closed on the exchanges. No price discovery will take place in the cash market on this day. Markets will open as usual on Monday, October 5.

The country will celebrate the day with prayers at Rajghat in Delhi, where the President, the Prime Minister and other senior citizens will offer floral tributes.

After Friday, the markets will remain closed again on Tuesday, October 20, on account of Dussehra. Otherwise, the markets will remain open on all other weekdays. Here’s the full list of trading holidays for the equity and equity derivatives segments in 2026:

With Friday’s holiday, October will have 11 non-trading days in total once weekends are factored in. Investors should also note that any transaction requiring bank settlement will similarly pause on the holiday, since banks typically observe the same festival closures, even though digital banking services like UPI and ATM withdrawals remain unaffected.

With Dussehra and Diwali following in October and November, festival season is well and truly around the corner, a period that has historically coincided with a seasonal pickup in retail participation, consumption-linked stock activity, and festive buying across sectors from jewellery to autos to real estate.

Looking ahead, Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on Sunday, November 8, when the NSE and BSE will hold a special Muhurat Trading session marking the start of the new Samvat year. The exchanges will announce the exact session timings closer to the date.
