Mumbai, 4 July 2025: In a significant move to bolster India’s domestic defence manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has approved capital acquisition proposals totalling approximately ₹1.05 lakh crore. All projects fall under the ‘Buy (Indian–IDDM)’ category, aimed at promoting indigenous design, development, and manufacturing.
₹1.05 Lakh Crore Cleared for Strategic Defence Equipment Across Armed Forces
At its meeting held on 3 July 2025, the DAC granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for 10 capital acquisition proposals, all to be executed through Indian vendors. These approvals are intended to upgrade operational capability across the Army, Navy, and Air Force while encouraging innovation within the Indian defence industry.
Comprehensive List of Systems Approved for Indigenous Procurement
The approved systems are strategically selected to strengthen battlefield efficiency, maritime security, air defence, and logistics coordination. Below is a summary of the systems cleared under the procurement plan:
| Category | Equipment | Strategic Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Army | Armoured Recovery Vehicles | Enhanced mobility and battlefield support |
| Tri-Services | Electronic Warfare Systems | Improved surveillance and communication security |
| Tri-Services | Integrated Common Inventory Management System | Better logistics and supply chain coordination |
| Air Defence | Surface-to-Air Missiles | Strengthened aerial threat response |
| Navy | Moored Mines | Maritime threat deterrence |
| Navy | Mine Counter Measure Vessels | Risk mitigation for naval and merchant vessels |
| Navy | Super Rapid Gun Mount | Enhanced naval firepower |
| Navy | Submersible Autonomous Vessels | Underwater surveillance and tactical operations |
Focus on Indigenous Design and Technology Development
All ten projects have been approved under the ‘Buy (Indian–IDDM)’ route—India’s highest category for defence procurement that mandates both design and manufacturing to be done domestically. This decision is set to accelerate India’s R&D capabilities in defence, generate substantial employment, and encourage long-term technological advancement in the sector.
Strategic Push for Self-Reliance Amid Global Security Shifts
The procurement decisions reflect India’s long-term vision to develop a self-sustaining defence ecosystem. By reducing dependency on foreign defence imports, the initiative strengthens national resilience against supply chain vulnerabilities, especially vital given today’s evolving regional and global security landscape.
Role of DAC in Advancing Defence Readiness
As the apex decision-making body for capital acquisitions in the Ministry of Defence, the DAC plays a crucial role in ensuring that essential equipment is procured in a timely and cost-effective manner. The council’s approval ensures that all three armed services are equipped with advanced, homegrown technology to enhance readiness and strategic advantage.
