New Delhi, Oct 12: Gold prices have increased on Monday. According to Goodreturns.in, 24-carat gold (99.9 per cent purity) costs Rs. 15,098 per gram in most cities. 22-carat gold (91.6 per cent purity) costs Rs. 13,840 per gram, while 18-carat gold is priced at Rs. 11,324 per gram.

On Friday, prices stood at Rs. 15,071, Rs. 13,815 and Rs. 11,303 per gram for 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold, respectively. This represents an increase of Rs. 27, Rs. 25 and Rs. 21, respectively, translating into gains of about 0.18-0.19 per cent.

For 10 grams, prices in the Mumbai cluster of cities stand at Rs. 1,50,980 for 24-carat gold, Rs. 1,38,400 for 22-carat gold and Rs. 1,13,240 for 18-carat gold. This means buyers will have to pay an additional Rs. 270, Rs. 250 and Rs. 210, respectively, compared with Friday.

The price of 10 grams of 24-carat gold is also Rs. 1,800 higher than last Monday’s price of Rs. 1,49,180. Gold prices in India depend on international gold prices and the rupee-dollar exchange rate. The NSE shows the October USD-INR futures contract at Rs. 95.9200 as of 10:08 am, lower than the Rs. 96.9300 seen on Friday morning, which indicates a firmer rupee. The increase may therefore be driven by higher global gold prices.

Most jewellers deal in 22-carat gold, which is priced at Rs. 1,38,400 per 10 grams in the Mumbai cluster. This is Rs. 250 higher than Friday’s price.

Prices across cities remain broadly similar to the previous session. Delhi continues to be the most expensive city, with 24-carat gold priced at Rs. 15,113 per gram. This is Rs. 15 higher than the rate of Rs. 15,098 per gram in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune.

A similar trend can be seen in 22-carat and 18-carat gold prices, with Delhi charging Rs. 15 more per gram than the Mumbai cluster. Vadodara and Ahmedabad have 24-carat prices of Rs. 15,103 per gram, which is Rs. 5 higher than the Mumbai cluster. In Chennai, 18-carat gold is priced at Rs. 11,370 per gram, Rs. 46 higher than the Mumbai cluster.

Every row in the three tables shows a rise. In 24K and 22K gold, all ten cities saw the same increase of ₹270 and ₹250 per 10 grams, respectively, while 18K gold rose by ₹210 in nine cities and ₹200 in Chennai.

Keep in mind that these are bullion rates. Jewellery will cost more than these rates because you will have to pay making charges, wastage charges and 3% GST on the value of the gold. GST alone adds about ₹4,529 on a 10-gram purchase of 24K gold at today’s rate. If you want to invest in gold but do not want to worry about storing it or its purity, you can consider gold ETFs. These ETFs track gold prices and do not require you to physically own the metal.

With the festive season approaching and Dussehra, Dhanteras and Diwali still to come, buyers will be watching whether the rate keeps climbing or settles at current levels. At ₹15,098 per gram, 50 grams of 24K gold costs ₹7,54,900 before making charges and GST. A 22K chain weighing 20 grams would cost ₹2,76,800 in gold value alone at ₹13,840 a gram, which is ₹500 more than on Friday.
