New Delhi, Sept 18: Gold prices in India jumped sharply on Friday, with the national 24 karat gold rate (99.9% purity) rising to ₹1,54,420 per 10 grams, 22 karat gold (91.6% purity) climbing to ₹1,41,550 per 10 grams, and 18 karat gold moving up to ₹1,15,820 per 10 grams in most cities — a gain of roughly ₹970 per 10 grams in 24K gold since Thursday’s ₹1,53,450, an advance of about 0.63%. Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad all posted that broadly uniform rise. Chennai, however, moved in the opposite direction entirely: the city’s 24K rate fell to ₹1,52,830 per 10 grams, down roughly ₹620 from Thursday, a sharp and unusual divergence from the otherwise nationwide rally.

Gold has traditionally been viewed as an effective hedge against inflation, and Friday’s sharp move higher across most of the country comes after a quiet, near-flat session on Thursday. Buyers looking to purchase gold can refer to a Gold Rate Calculator to determine the expected final billed price at the jeweller’s counter, based on their desired purchase quantity and taking into account making charges, wastage and applicable GST. Figures stated here are indicative national averages aggregated from trusted jewellers across the country and updated multiple times through the trading day; expect actual prices at the jewellery counter to vary slightly between different retailers.

Dealers said Friday’s sharp national rise reflects a renewed pickup in overseas buying interest, a sharp reversal from Thursday’s near-total pause. A softer US dollar and firmer global bullion prices gave gold a fresh push higher across most cities, though Chennai’s contrarian move stood out as the session’s biggest talking point. Local bullion associations in Chennai typically set their own city-level rate independent of the national average, and dealers said Friday’s decline there likely reflects a local correction after the city had carried an unusually wide premium in recent sessions, rather than any city-specific demand shock.

Physical demand at the jewellery counter has continued to build through the week, jewellers said, with the festive season now in full swing following Monday’s Ganesh Chaturthi. Retailers reported steady footfall for coins, light everyday jewellery and wedding-season pieces alike. With Navratri and Diwali still weeks away, jewellers said they expect demand to keep climbing through the coming fortnight, even as bullion prices themselves swing sharply from city to city.

India fetches daily nationwide gold rates from designated dealer forums in each city, compiled and published here each morning. These rates are subject to change by the time you arrive at a jewellery or bullion dealer later in the day, so confirm the price your jeweller will offer before making a purchase.

City-Wise Gold Rates: Yesterday vs Today

The tables below list gold rates from Thursday (Sept 17) against Friday’s (Sept 18) rates for 10 major cities, quoted per 10 grams for 24K, 22K and 18K gold. Nine of the ten cities show a broadly uniform rise across all three purities — roughly ₹970 for 24K, ₹890 for 22K and ₹730 for 18K. Chennai is the lone outlier, falling by roughly ₹620, ₹570 and ₹560 respectively across the three purities, moving in the opposite direction from the rest of the country.

As the tables show, Chennai’s 18K rate has fallen to ₹1,17,790 per 10 grams, sharply narrowing its premium over Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune — now at ₹1,15,820 — to under ₹2,000, well below the roughly ₹3,260 gap seen a day earlier. Delhi’s 18K rate, at ₹1,15,970, continues to sit about ₹150 above Mumbai’s level, unaffected by Chennai’s move. Market participants said Friday’s split — a sharp nationwide rally alongside a pointed Chennai correction — is worth watching closely over the weekend to see whether Chennai’s rate reconverges with the rest of the country.

International Cues Behind Friday’s Rally

Overnight moves in global bullion markets were the primary driver behind Friday’s sharp national uptick, dealers said, with spot gold prices internationally posting a firm gain that fed directly into the day’s Indian city rates. A softer US dollar made gold cheaper for holders of other currencies, while lower Treasury yields added further support to the metal. Traders said the renewed buying interest marks a clear break from Thursday’s near-total pause, though Chennai’s contrarian move served as a reminder that city-level bullion pricing in India can diverge sharply from the national trend even on days of strong global momentum.

Jewellery Stocks Today

Jewellery stocks were broadly higher on Friday morning, in step with the sharp national rally in gold prices. Thangamayil Jewellery led the gainers by a wide margin, up 3.88%, followed by PC Jeweller, up 1.78%, and Kalyan Jewellers India, up a modest 0.48%. Titan Company was the lone decliner among the four counters, down 0.38%, holding roughly steady even as its peers rallied. Trading was still underway at the time of writing.

PC Jeweller opened at ₹12.51, dipped sharply to a low of ₹12.37 within the first few minutes, then reversed hard through the rest of the morning to a fresh high of ₹12.74 before settling around ₹12.57. Titan Company opened at ₹4,895.00, just below its previous close, and slid steadily through the morning to a low of ₹4,880.50 before a partial late recovery to ₹4,890.00, the lone counter to spend the session in negative territory. Kalyan Jewellers India opened higher at ₹585.00, dipped briefly to a low of ₹580.00, then climbed steadily to a high of ₹586.65 before easing slightly to ₹584.25. Thangamayil Jewellery was the standout performer, opening at ₹4,844.00 and rallying sharply to a high of ₹5,048.00, comfortably crossing the ₹5,000 mark before settling near ₹4,997.50.

Market watchers said Friday’s broadly stronger session among jewellery counters, in step with gold’s own sharp national rally, suggests the sector is once again tracking bullion prices closely. Dealers pointed to Thangamayil Jewellery’s near-4% surge as the standout move of the morning, while Titan’s mild decline stood out as the one exception in an otherwise strongly positive session. Analysts said the day’s pattern — three gainers against one decliner, alongside gold’s own sharp rise — reinforces the view that renewed bullion momentum is feeding directly into investor sentiment across the jewellery sector.
