New Delhi, Sept 2: Gold prices in India fell sharply on Wednesday morning, marking the steepest single-session decline in recent weeks after a stretch of gains earlier this week. Today’s national rate for gold stands at ₹1,52,020 per 10 grams for 24 karat gold (99.9% purity), ₹1,39,350 per 10 grams for 22 karat gold (91.6% purity), and ₹1,14,020 per 10 grams for 18 karat gold (75% purity). On a per-gram basis, that works out to ₹15,202 for 24K, ₹13,935 for 22K, and ₹11,402 for 18K gold, while a full kilogram of 24K gold is now valued at approximately ₹1,52,02,000.

The move marks a sharp fall of ₹4,910 for 24K gold, ₹4,500 for 22K gold, and ₹3,680 for 18K gold per 10 grams over Tuesday’s closing levels of ₹1,56,930, ₹1,43,850 and ₹1,17,700, respectively — equivalent to a uniform decline of about 3.13% across all three purity categories. The steep correction breaks Tuesday’s mixed session, in which 24K and 22K gold had edged higher even as 18K gold eased, and instead pulls all three categories sharply lower in tandem for the first time this week.

Gold has long been considered a reliable hedge against inflation, and Wednesday’s sharp correction is unlikely to change that view among long-term investors, even as the scale of the single-day fall may prompt some short-term caution. Buyers looking for exact pricing can use the Gold Rate Calculator to work out the final cost, including making charges and GST, before heading to a jewellery counter. Rates are updated daily and sourced from reputed jewellers across the country.

Dealers attributed Wednesday’s steep fall to heavy profit-booking in global spot gold prices after this week’s earlier gains, along with signs of easing geopolitical risk premium as diplomatic channels around the Iran-US standoff showed tentative signs of de-escalation. A firmer US dollar and reduced safe-haven demand also weighed on prices, with traders describing Wednesday’s move as the sharpest single-session correction gold has seen in India in recent weeks. Indian equity benchmarks traded mixed through the morning session even as gold extended its slide.

Physical demand at the retail level held up despite the sharp fall, dealers said, with the wedding and festive season in several parts of the country continuing to support jewellery counter footfall. Market watchers noted that Wednesday’s steep correction has brought gold to its most affordable level in several weeks, a trend that could draw in fresh retail buying through the rest of the week if prices stabilise near current levels.

City-Wise Gold Rates on Wednesday

Gold rates across India’s major cities broadly mirrored the national trend on Wednesday, with 24K and 22K gold falling by a uniform ₹4,910 and ₹4,500 per 10 grams, respectively, in most cities. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune are all pricing 24K gold at ₹1,52,020 per 10 grams and 22K gold at ₹1,39,350 per 10 grams, in line with the national rate. Delhi continues to command the highest 24K and 22K gold rates among the ten cities, with 24K gold priced at ₹1,52,170 per 10 grams, while Chennai stood out with a far smaller decline of ₹2,300 per 10 grams in 24K gold, leaving it with the widest premium over the national rate among all ten cities.

The 18K segment showed a similar pattern, with Chennai again posting a smaller decline of ₹2,110 per 10 grams against a uniform fall of roughly ₹3,680 to ₹3,710 per 10 grams elsewhere. Mumbai and Pune fell the most in percentage terms, down ₹3,680 per 10 grams to ₹1,14,020, while Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala, Vadodara and Ahmedabad each eased by a slightly larger ₹3,710 per 10 grams. Chennai’s comparatively muted decline across all three purities has further widened its premium over the national average, a pattern consistent with local jewellery-market pricing conventions in the city.

Retail buyers are reminded that quoted bullion rates are indicative, and actual billed prices at jewellery counters will vary once making charges, wastage and applicable GST are added on top of the base metal value.

Market watchers said Wednesday’s sharp, uniform correction across all three purity categories marks a clear break from the mixed, range-bound moves seen earlier in the week, and could signal the start of a deeper pullback if global cues stay unfavourable. With gold’s near-term direction likely to hinge on how the Iran-US situation and US dollar trends evolve over the coming sessions, dealers advised buyers to track rates closely rather than assume Wednesday’s steep fall marks a durable floor.

Jewellery Stocks Today

Shares of listed jewellery companies were broadly lower around mid-morning trade on Wednesday, tracking the sharp fall in gold prices, with PC Jeweller, Titan Company, Kalyan Jewellers India and Thangamayil Jewellery all trading in the red. Kalyan Jewellers India led the losses among the group, while Thangamayil Jewellery recorded the smallest decline. Trading was still underway through the morning session at the time of writing.

PC Jeweller: Capital-Raising Moves in Focus

PC Jeweller shares fell on Tuesday after partially recovering in the previous session, leaving the stock down about 1.5% over the past five trading sessions, even as shareholders cleared a set of capital-raising measures aimed at boosting the jewellery retailer’s financial flexibility. Investors approved raising the company’s authorised share capital to ₹1,460 crore — comprising ₹1,200 crore in equity and ₹260 crore in preference shares — alongside a separate proposal to raise up to ₹1,000 crore through a Qualified Institutional Placement. The moves are aimed at strengthening liquidity, funding expansion and meeting working-capital needs, giving PC Jeweller additional headroom to pursue its growth plans as it continues efforts to shore up its financial position.
