New Delhi, August 20: Gold prices in India surged sharply on Thursday, extending the rebound seen through the week as all three major purity categories posted strong gains through the morning session. Today’s national rate for gold stands at ₹1,59,270 per 10 grams for 24 karat gold (99.9% purity), ₹1,46,000 per 10 grams for 22 karat gold (91.6% purity), and ₹1,19,460 per 10 grams for 18 karat gold (75% purity). On a per-gram basis, that works out to ₹15,927 for 24K, ₹14,600 for 22K, and ₹11,946 for 18K gold, while a full kilogram of 24K gold is now valued at approximately ₹1,59,27,000.
The jump marks a sharp gain of ₹4,300 for 24K gold, ₹3,950 for 22K gold, and ₹3,230 for 18K gold per 10 grams over Wednesday’s closing levels of ₹1,54,970, ₹1,42,050 and ₹1,16,230, respectively — equivalent to a per-gram rise of ₹430, ₹395 and ₹323. Thursday’s move is by far the sharpest single-day gain gold has recorded in India this week, reversing Wednesday’s mild pullback and then some.
Gold has long been considered a reliable hedge against inflation, and Thursday’s rally is likely to reinforce that view among investors, who continue to treat the metal as an important part of a diversified portfolio during periods of global uncertainty. Dealers attributed Thursday’s sharp rally to a broad-based rebound in global spot gold prices, driven by renewed safe-haven demand and a softer US dollar overnight. Fresh uncertainty around the US Federal Reserve’s next policy move, along with heightened geopolitical tension in key regions, appears to have prompted investors to rotate back into bullion in a hurry. Traders said the scale of Thursday’s move — a jump of nearly ₹430 per gram in a single session — suggests the rally was driven as much by momentum buying as by any single fresh catalyst, and cautioned that some of today’s gain could unwind if global sentiment stabilises.
Physical demand at the retail level also appears to be holding up despite the higher prices, dealers said, with the ongoing wedding and festive season in several parts of the country continuing to support jewellery counter footfall even as bullion rates climb. Market watchers noted that such sharp single-day rallies often prompt a wait-and-watch approach among retail buyers, who may hold off on large purchases until prices show signs of stabilising.
City-Wise Gold Rates: Thursday vs Wednesday
The tables below set Wednesday’s (Aug 19) closing rates for 10 major Indian cities against Thursday’s (Aug 20) rates, purity by purity, quoted per 10 grams, with the day-on-day change alongside. The 24K and 22K gains were uniform at ₹4,300 and ₹3,950, respectively, across all ten cities, keeping their relative premiums intact. Delhi continues to run the highest rate nationally, roughly ₹150 above the national average across purities, while Vadodara and Ahmedabad trade a smaller premium of about ₹50 above the national rate.
The 18K table again shows a more varied pattern across cities. Chennai posted the sharpest 18K gain at ₹3,950 per 10 grams, matching the increase seen in 22K gold, while Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad rose by a smaller ₹3,230. Kolkata, Hyderabad and Kerala recorded the mildest 18K increase of the ten cities at ₹2,500 per 10 grams, continuing the divergence from the national trend that has been visible in these three cities’ 18K pricing over recent sessions.

Retail buyers are reminded that quoted bullion rates are indicative, and actual billed prices at jewellery counters will vary once making charges, wastage and applicable GST are added on top of the base metal value. Investors who are looking to diversify beyond physical gold can also explore the list of Gold ETFs in India, which track bullion prices without the need to store physical metal.
Market watchers said Thursday’s sharp move higher, following a week of relatively range-bound trading, points to gold reasserting itself as a preferred safe-haven asset amid global uncertainty. With volatility elevated, dealers expect prices to remain choppy through the rest of the week, and advised buyers to track rates closely rather than assume today’s higher levels will hold through the weekend.
