New Delhi, August 24: Gold prices in India opened the week sharply higher, with all three major purity categories posting strong gains on Monday morning after a relatively steady close to last week. Today’s national rate for gold stands at ₹1,63,970 per 10 grams for 24 karat gold (99.9% purity), ₹1,50,300 per 10 grams for 22 karat gold (91.6% purity), and ₹1,22,930 per 10 grams for 18 karat gold (75% purity). On a per-gram basis, that works out to ₹16,397 for 24K, ₹15,030 for 22K, and ₹12,293 for 18K gold, while a full kilogram of 24K gold is now valued at approximately ₹1,63,97,000.
The jump marks a sharp gain of ₹4,690 for 24K gold, ₹4,290 for 22K gold, and ₹3,460 for 18K gold per 10 grams over Friday’s closing levels of ₹1,59,280, ₹1,46,010 and ₹1,19,470, respectively — equivalent to a per-gram rise of ₹469, ₹429 and ₹346, or close to 2.9% across all three purities. The rally ranks among the sharpest single-session gains gold has recorded in India this month, with prices climbing steadily even though Indian markets were shut over the weekend for Saturday and Sunday.
Gold has long been considered a reliable hedge against inflation and global uncertainty, and Monday’s sharp rally is likely to reinforce that view among investors heading into the new trading week. Dealers attributed Monday’s sharp move to a broad-based rally in global spot gold prices over the weekend, driven by renewed safe-haven demand and continued uncertainty around US-Iran tensions. A softer US dollar and fresh expectations around the US Federal Reserve’s next policy move also appear to have prompted investors to rotate back into bullion in a hurry. Traders said the scale of Monday’s jump — nearly ₹470 per gram from Friday’s close — suggests the rally was driven as much by momentum buying as by any single fresh catalyst, and cautioned that some of today’s gain could unwind if global sentiment stabilises through the week.
Physical demand at the retail level also appears to be holding up despite the sharply higher prices, dealers said, with the wedding and festive season in several parts of the country continuing to support jewellery counter footfall even as bullion rates climb. Market watchers noted that such sharp single-day rallies often prompt a wait-and-watch approach among retail buyers, who may hold off on large purchases until prices show signs of stabilising.
City-Wise Gold Rates on Monday
Gold rates across India’s major cities largely mirrored the national trend on Monday, with most markets quoting identical rates to the national average across all three purity categories. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune are all pricing 24K gold at ₹1,63,970 per 10 grams, 22K gold at ₹1,50,300 per 10 grams, and 18K gold at ₹1,22,930 per 10 grams — in line with the national rate. Delhi continues to command the highest gold rates among the ten cities, with 24K gold priced at ₹1,64,120 per 10 grams, a premium of ₹150 over the national average that has held steady in recent sessions. The gain over Friday was uniform at ₹4,690 per 10 grams for 24K gold and ₹4,290 per 10 grams for 22K gold across all ten cities, keeping relative premiums intact.
Vadodara and Ahmedabad are quoted marginally higher than the national rate too, with 24K gold priced at ₹1,64,020 per 10 grams in both cities, a premium of about ₹50. Chennai stands out for its 18K pricing, coming in at ₹1,28,000 per 10 grams — a significantly wider gap of ₹5,070 above the national 18K rate, even as its 24K and 22K rates match the national average exactly. Chennai’s 18K gold also rose the most of the ten cities on Monday, up ₹4,190 per 10 grams over Friday, while the other nine cities recorded a smaller uniform gain of ₹3,460 per 10 grams in 18K gold — a divergence that reflects local market conventions around 18K jewellery pricing rather than any difference in the underlying metal cost.

Retail buyers are reminded that quoted bullion rates are indicative, and actual billed prices at jewellery counters will vary once making charges, wastage and applicable GST are added on top of the base metal value. Investors who are looking to diversify beyond physical gold can also explore the list of Gold ETFs in India, which track bullion prices without the need to store physical metal.
Market watchers said Monday’s sharp rally, coming after a relatively calm end to last week, points to gold reasserting itself as a preferred safe-haven asset amid global uncertainty. With volatility elevated and US-Iran tensions unresolved, dealers expect prices to remain choppy through the week, and advised buyers to track rates closely rather than assume today’s higher levels will hold through the coming sessions.
