New Delhi, August 27: Gold prices in India extended their pullback on Thursday morning, with all three major purity categories falling more sharply than Wednesday’s modest dip. Today’s national rate for gold stands at ₹1,62,980 per 10 grams for 24 karat gold (99.9% purity), ₹1,49,400 per 10 grams for 22 karat gold (91.6% purity), and ₹1,22,240 per 10 grams for 18 karat gold (75% purity). On a per-gram basis, that works out to ₹16,298 for 24K, ₹14,940 for 22K, and ₹12,224 for 18K gold, while a full kilogram of 24K gold is now valued at approximately ₹1,62,98,000.

The move marks a decline of ₹760 for 24K gold, ₹690 for 22K gold, and ₹560 for 18K gold per 10 grams over Wednesday’s closing levels of ₹1,63,740, ₹1,50,090 and ₹1,22,800, respectively — equivalent to a per-gram fall of ₹76, ₹69 and ₹56, or close to 0.46%. The pullback is sharper than Wednesday’s modest ₹240 decline and marks the steepest single-session drop gold has recorded in India this week, extending the retreat from Monday’s sharp rally.

Gold has long been considered a reliable hedge against inflation, and its steady pullback over the past two sessions is unlikely to change that view among investors, who continue to treat the metal as an important part of a diversified portfolio during periods of global uncertainty. Buyers looking for exact pricing can use the Gold Rate Calculator to work out the final cost, including making charges and GST, before heading to a jewellery counter.

Dealers attributed Thursday’s sharper fall to continued profit-booking in global spot gold prices, with investors turning cautious ahead of fresh cues on the US Federal Reserve’s policy path. A steadier US dollar and easing concerns over the US-Iran standoff also appear to have prompted some investors to book profits after last week’s sharp rally, even as broader risk sentiment stayed mixed and Indian equity benchmarks traded choppy through the morning session.

Physical demand at the retail level remained steady, dealers said, with the ongoing wedding and festive season in several parts of the country continuing to support jewellery counter footfall even as prices ease from recent highs. Market watchers noted that two consecutive days of falling prices often draw in retail buyers looking to make purchases at more comfortable levels after a stretch of firm rates.

City-Wise Gold Rates on Thursday

Gold rates across India’s major cities largely mirrored the national trend on Thursday, with most markets quoting identical rates to the national average across all three purity categories. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune are all pricing 24K gold at ₹1,62,980 per 10 grams, 22K gold at ₹1,49,400 per 10 grams, and 18K gold at ₹1,22,240 per 10 grams — in line with the national rate. Delhi continues to command the highest gold rates among the ten cities, with 24K gold priced at ₹1,63,130 per 10 grams, a premium of ₹150 over the national average that has held steady in recent sessions. The decline over Wednesday was uniform at ₹760 per 10 grams for 24K gold and ₹690 per 10 grams for 22K gold across all ten cities, keeping relative premiums intact.

Vadodara and Ahmedabad are quoted marginally higher than the national rate too, with 24K gold priced at ₹1,63,030 per 10 grams in both cities, a premium of about ₹50. Chennai stands out for its 18K pricing, coming in at ₹1,27,100 per 10 grams — a significantly wider gap of about ₹4,860 above the national 18K rate, even as its 24K and 22K rates match the national average exactly. Chennai’s 18K gold also fell the most of the ten cities on Thursday, down ₹690 per 10 grams from Wednesday, while the other nine cities recorded a smaller uniform decline of ₹560 per 10 grams in 18K gold — a divergence that reflects local market conventions around 18K jewellery pricing rather than any difference in the underlying metal cost.

Retail buyers are reminded that quoted bullion rates are indicative, and actual billed prices at jewellery counters will vary once making charges, wastage and applicable GST are added on top of the base metal value.

Market watchers said Thursday’s sharper pullback, coming after Wednesday’s more modest dip, points to gold extending its retreat from Monday’s sharp rally rather than reversing course entirely. With volatility still elevated and US-Iran tensions unresolved, dealers expect prices to remain choppy through the rest of the week, and advised buyers to track rates closely rather than assume today’s lower levels will hold through the coming sessions.
