New Delhi, August 31: Gold prices in India opened the week on a soft note, with rates easing for a second straight session as the metal continued to give back part of last week’s sharp rally. Today’s national rate for gold stands at ₹1,56,770 per 10 grams for 24 karat gold (99.9% purity), ₹1,43,700 per 10 grams for 22 karat gold (91.6% purity), and ₹1,17,850 per 10 grams for 18 karat gold (75% purity). On a per-gram basis, that works out to ₹15,677 for 24K, ₹14,370 for 22K, and ₹11,785 for 18K gold, while a full kilogram of 24K gold is now valued at approximately ₹1,56,77,000.
The move marks a decline of ₹3,050 for 24K gold, ₹2,800 for 22K gold, and ₹2,020 for 18K gold per 10 grams over Friday’s closing levels of ₹1,59,820, ₹1,46,500 and ₹1,19,870, respectively — equivalent to a per-gram fall of ₹305, ₹280 and ₹202, or close to 1.91% for 24K and 22K gold and about 1.69% for 18K gold. Monday’s opening levels reflect the cumulative pullback since Friday’s steep drop, extending the retreat into a third straight trading day.
Gold has long been considered a reliable hedge against inflation, and the continued pullback over recent sessions is unlikely to change that view among investors, who continue to treat the metal as an important part of a diversified portfolio during periods of global uncertainty. Buyers looking for exact pricing can use the Gold Rate Calculator to work out the final cost, including making charges and GST, before heading to a jewellery counter.
Dealers attributed Monday’s softer opening to continued profit-booking in global spot gold prices following last week’s sharp rally, along with a steadier US dollar as trading resumed after the weekend. Easing safe-haven demand appears to have kept sellers in control at the start of the week, with traders describing the move as a continuation of Friday’s correction rather than a fresh leg lower. Indian equity benchmarks traded mixed through the morning session even as gold extended its retreat.
Physical demand at the retail level remained resilient despite the ongoing slide, dealers said, with the wedding and festive season in several parts of the country continuing to support jewellery counter footfall. Market watchers noted that gold’s fourth session of declines out of the last five has brought rates to their most affordable level in nearly two weeks, a trend that could draw in fresh retail buying through the week if prices stabilise.
City-Wise Gold Rates on Monday
Gold rates across India’s major cities largely mirrored the national trend on Monday, with most markets quoting identical rates to the national average across all three purity categories. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune are all pricing 24K gold at ₹1,56,770 per 10 grams, 22K gold at ₹1,43,700 per 10 grams, and 18K gold at ₹1,17,850 per 10 grams — in line with the national rate. Delhi continues to command the highest 24K and 22K gold rates among the ten cities, with 24K gold priced at ₹1,56,920 per 10 grams, a premium of ₹150 over the national average. The decline over Friday was uniform at ₹2,800 per 10 grams for 22K gold across all ten cities, keeping relative premiums broadly intact, while Delhi’s 24K decline of ₹2,950 was marginally smaller than the ₹3,050 seen elsewhere.
Vadodara and Ahmedabad are quoted at a smaller premium than Delhi, with 24K gold priced at ₹1,56,820 per 10 grams in both cities. Chennai stands out for its 18K pricing, coming in at ₹1,21,400 per 10 grams — a significantly wider gap of about ₹3,550 above the national 18K rate, even as its 24K and 22K rates match the national average exactly. Chennai’s 18K gold also fell the most of the ten cities on Monday, down ₹2,800 per 10 grams from Friday, while most other cities recorded a smaller uniform decline of ₹2,020 per 10 grams, a divergence reflecting local market conventions around 18K jewellery pricing.

Retail buyers are reminded that quoted bullion rates are indicative, and actual billed prices at jewellery counters will vary once making charges, wastage and applicable GST are added on top of the base metal value.

Market watchers said Monday’s fresh decline, the fourth in five sessions, points to gold settling into a more meaningful correction after last week’s rally rather than simply consolidating. With volatility still elevated and global cues mixed, dealers said the coming sessions will be key to determining whether the metal stabilises around current levels or extends its slide further, and advised buyers to track rates closely rather than assume today’s lower levels will hold through the week.
Jewellery Stocks Today
Shares of listed jewellery companies were broadly lower around mid-morning trade on Monday, tracking the fall in gold prices, with all four major names — Titan Company, Kalyan Jewellers India, Thangamayil Jewellery and PC Jeweller — trading in the red.
