New Delhi, Oct 6: Gold in India edged lower on Tuesday, with 24 karat gold (99.9% purity) at ₹14,902 per gram in most cities, 22 karat (91.6% purity) at ₹13,660 per gram and 18 karat at ₹11,177 per gram, according to Goodreturns.in.
The 24K rate is down ₹16 per gram from Monday’s level, a fall of about 0.11 per cent, or ₹160 per 10 grams. The 22K rate eased ₹15 per gram, while 18K slipped ₹12 per gram in most cities, extending the slide that set in last week and carried into Monday’s session. On a 10-gram basis, 24K gold is quoted at ₹1,49,020, 22K at ₹1,36,600 and 18K at ₹1,11,770 in the Mumbai cluster of cities.
The decline is much milder than Monday’s drop of ₹1,100 per 10 grams in 24K gold, but it keeps the metal on the back foot at the start of the week. Gold prices in India track international bullion rates and the dollar-rupee exchange rate, so even a modest daily move reflects how global cues and the currency settled overnight. The broader equity market was firmer in late-morning deals, with the Nifty 50 trading around 22,650, up about 0.43 per cent, while the USDINR futures contract expiring on October 28 was quoted near ₹96.61.
The 24K and 22K rates fell by the same margin in all ten major cities tracked, with Delhi again carrying the highest 24K rate at ₹14,917 per gram, a ₹15 premium over the Mumbai-Kolkata-Bangalore-Hyderabad-Kerala-Pune cluster at ₹14,902. Vadodara and Ahmedabad held their smaller ₹5 per gram premium at ₹14,907. The 18K market was less uniform. Chennai’s 18K rate stood at ₹11,220 per gram against ₹11,177 in the Mumbai cluster, a gap of ₹43 that has narrowed from ₹46 on Monday. Delhi remained the costliest market for 22K gold as well, at ₹13,675 per gram against ₹13,660 in the Mumbai cluster.

City-wise premiums of ₹15 per gram for 24K and 22K gold in Delhi, and ₹5 per gram in Vadodara and Ahmedabad, remained constant through the decline, which means the fall in these two purities was purely at the national level. In 18K gold, Chennai’s fall of ₹15 per gram was slightly steeper than the ₹12 seen in most cities, which trimmed its premium. Vadodara and Ahmedabad moved the other way, slipping only ₹8 per gram, which widened their premium over the Mumbai cluster to ₹5 per gram.
Keep in mind that these are bullion rates. Jewellery will cost more than these rates because you will have to pay making charges, wastage charges and 3% GST on the value of the gold. If you want to invest in gold but do not want to worry about storing it or its purity, you can consider gold ETFs. These ETFs track gold prices and do not require you to physically own the metal. These are indicative prices, so please check with your nearest jeweller or dealer for the final rate before making a purchase.
As the festive season approaches, with Navratri, Dussehra, Dhanteras and Diwali still to come, jewellers expect the mild decline seen at the beginning of the week to drive demand this month. For wedding purchases, most customers would have already decided how much they want to spend. Any daily rise or fall in gold prices would therefore reflect in the total amount spent by the end of the season. If you are planning to buy 50g or 100g of gold, the difference could be significant. Although a drop of ₹160 per 10 grams is negligible compared with the price of approximately ₹1.5 lakh, the savings become more meaningful for larger purchases. For a 50g purchase, the fall from Monday’s rates would mean savings of ₹800, while a 100g purchase of 24K gold would result in savings of ₹1,600.
