New Delhi, Sep 16 – The Central Government is all set to launch the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma MedTech (PRIP) scheme in September 2025. The scheme aims to boost domestic innovation and R&D in key sectors, including pharmaceuticals and medical tech. The scheme was announced in August 2023 and has a financial outlay of ₹5000 crore. Out of the total outlay, around ₹4250 crore will be used exclusively for strengthening the R&D ecosystem in the country.

The scheme will provide 30-50% funding support, depending on the nature of the new projects, and will cover both early and late-stage innovations.

Focus on the Domestic Ecosystem

Amit Agrawal, the secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, underlined that such an initiative is critical in the current time as it will improve the country’s ability to produce critical raw materials and components, making local manufacturing more viable and globally competitive. He also noted that the medtech sector has achieved double-digit growth over the last one and a half decades, and this trend is expected to continue in the future.

Agrawal also informed that three medical device parks are under development, expected to be operational by early 2027. These facilities, along with future specialised infrastructure for medical-grade materials, are aimed at scaling up India’s manufacturing base.

Government’s Push for Sunrise Sector

The MoS (Minister of State) for Health, Ms Anupriya Patel, described medtech as a sunrise sector underlining India’s emergence as both a high-volume and high-value player in the global medtech market. She added that the sector has seen strong momentum, with growth in both domestic production and exports across segments.

The formal launch of PRIP this month is expected to accelerate further India’s position as a hub for pharma and medtech innovation, reinforcing the government’s larger goal of self-reliance in critical healthcare technologies.
