Hindustan Copper shares are seeing sharp rise today. This after price of copper touched record high of $12,000 per ton yesterday. At 11:40 a.m. IST, 24th December, 2025, Hindustan Copper shares are up by 5.13%, trading at Rs 428.70. Nifty 50 index is up by 0.043% at this time.
Demand for Copper has increased because of EVs, renewable energy
Copper prices have increased by more than 36% in the past 1 year. One reason for this rise is the sharp increase in demand for copper because of the coming of electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy. Copper has the characteristics of excellent conductivity and long term durability. This makes it ideal for use in EVs, solar panels etc.
The second reason for the increase is the disruption seen in copper mining in countries such as Chile. Escondida mine in Chile saw disruption in August due to strike by workers’ union. The largest open pit copper mine in the world, Chuquicamata, is located in Chile.
Expectation that President Trump may increase tariffs on copper
The third reason is the expectation that President Trump may increase tariffs on import of copper into United States. This has resulted in American importers placing significant copper purchase orders before any such tariff is announced.
Hindustan Copper is a public sector undertaking. It is presently the only company in India that does copper ore mining. It has copper ore mines in Madhya Pradesh (Malanjkhand), Rajasthan (Khetri) and Jharkhand (Ghatsila).
Hindustan Copper shares have risen by more than 74% this year
Hindustan Copper shares have risen by 74.52% year-to-date (YTD) in 2025. Much of these gains have come since August this year. Nifty 50 index has risen by 10.48% YTD in 2025.
