Mumbai, July 9, 2025 – Global technology giant Cisco has identified India as a potential key export hub in its global supply chain. With competitive labour costs, a skilled talent pool, and improving infrastructure in India, the country is attractive for setting up manufacturing and export operations. Government initiatives aimed to increase the ease of doing business, making India a logical alternative as a global manufacturing hub; however, the global trade policy framework requires more clarity.

Chuck Robbins, Chairman and CEO of Cisco, emphasised that India represents one of the biggest growth opportunities globally for the San Jose-headquartered company. “If you look out over the next five to ten years, I’m not sure there’s another place on the planet where you would expect the growth that we should see here,” Robbins said during his India visit.

India’s Export Potential Recognised

Robbins noted that India has become a “viable” destination for exports. The company began manufacturing operations in India approximately 18 months ago with a single product and is now expanding to include two additional products. Cisco’s manufacturing unit, located near Chennai, was inaugurated last year.

“India is now a viable place for exporting out of,” Robbins stated, adding that the country’s growth trajectory makes it an essential part of Cisco’s global strategy.

Investment Plans on Hold Amid Trade Uncertainty

Despite the positive outlook, Robbins highlighted that global geopolitical shifts, rising nationalism, and ongoing wars have created uncertainty around trade regulations and tariffs. These factors have led many multinational companies, including Cisco, to take a cautious stance.

“We just don’t know where it’s all going to land,” Robbins remarked, referring to the unpredictability of tariffs and sovereignty requirements. “No chief executive wishes to be in a place where a USD 20–30 million investment goes awry due to the tariff issue.”

Cisco is in touch with the White House and monitoring trade developments closely. Robbins clarified that any long-term investment or supply chain strategy would only be firmed up once there is more stability in the global trade landscape.

Strategic Role of India in Cisco’s Global Operations

India plays a critical role in Cisco’s research and development ecosystem. Robbins underlined a shift in perception of India, from being a cost-efficient market to a hub of world-class engineering talent. He also reiterated Cisco’s long-standing presence in India, spanning over 30 years.

During his visit, Robbins met Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and senior officials in New Delhi, emphasising Cisco’s interest in supporting the country’s digital and technological ambitions. He also acknowledged the growing divide between Chinese and American offerings in the global tech sector.

DEI Strategy Remains a Business Imperative

On the topic of corporate responsibility, Robbins emphasised Cisco’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a core strategy. He noted that diversity enhances innovation by bringing varied perspectives to solve complex challenges.

“Diversity gets the best of ideas,” Robbins said, affirming the company’s continued focus on inclusive business practices.

While Cisco remains optimistic about India’s potential, its future investment trajectory will hinge on the resolution of broader global trade dynamics.
