Mumbai, 2 November 2026: India VIX, the benchmark index measuring expected volatility in the Indian equity market, closed 1.31% higher at 15.50 on Monday, gaining 0.20 points from its previous close of 15.30. The index opened at 15.30, touched an intraday high of 15.92 and declined to a low of 14.54 during the trading session.
The increase came despite a strong rally in domestic equities, with the Nifty 50 gaining approximately 1.10% and the Sensex advancing around 1.17%. Developments surrounding US-Iran diplomatic discussions, falling crude oil prices, mixed Asian markets and continuing uncertainty over global technology stocks shaped the day’s volatility-related developments.
India VIX Closes 1.31% Higher at 15.50 Despite Market Rally
India VIX ended the 2 November trading session at 15.50, compared with its previous closing level of 15.30, registering an increase of 0.20 points or 1.31%. The index started the session at 15.30 and moved within a range of 14.54 to 15.92. Its 52-week range stood between 8.72 and 28.90, while its year-to-date return was recorded at 63.50%.
An earlier intraday snapshot around 11:55 AM showed India VIX at 15.66, up approximately 2.35%, indicating that the index had experienced an increase in volatility expectations during the morning before moderating towards the closing level. The Nifty 50 and Sensex, meanwhile, maintained positive territory, highlighting the difference between benchmark price movements and volatility expectations.
India VIX measures the market’s expectation of volatility over the next 30 days, based on Nifty options prices. Its movement reflects changes in the premiums associated with these options rather than the direction of the benchmark index alone. Consequently, the increase on Monday occurred alongside gains in domestic equities.
Reliance Industries Gains 6% as Strong Q2 Results Support Nifty
Reliance Industries emerged as one of the significant contributors to Monday’s domestic market rally following its September-quarter financial results. The company’s net profit increased approximately 40.6% year-on-year, supported by improved refining and petrochemical margins, alongside contributions from Jio Platforms and its energy business. Reliance shares gained approximately 6% in early trading, while another morning market update recorded an increase of more than 7% around 11 AM.
The earnings announcement supported the performance of the Nifty 50, given Reliance Industries’ heavyweight position in the benchmark index. The improvement in quarterly profitability also strengthened the domestic corporate earnings narrative. However, the broader market continued to face international uncertainties, including geopolitical developments and concerns surrounding global technology valuations.
Nifty Rises 1.10% As Broad-Based Buying Adds ₹6 Lakh Crore
The domestic equity rally extended beyond Reliance Industries, with several benchmark indices recording gains during Monday’s session. The Nifty 50 advanced approximately 1.10%, while the Sensex gained around 1.17%. The Nifty Midcap 50 increased 1.06%, and the Nifty Smallcap 50 rose 0.40%. The Nifty Bank recorded a comparatively modest increase of approximately 0.15%.
The broader market rally added more than ₹6 lakh crore to the combined market capitalisation of listed companies during the morning session. However, the difference between the gains in the headline indices and the relatively limited movement in the banking index reflected uneven performance across market segments. This domestic market strength coincided with the increase in India VIX, as the index continued to reflect volatility expectations through Nifty options pricing.
FII Buying Of ₹3,598 Crore On Friday Supports Opening Sentiment
Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) activity from the previous trading session was another factor relevant to Monday’s opening market conditions. FIIs recorded purchases worth approximately ₹3,598 crore on 30 October, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) registered net sales of around ₹818 crore during the same session. These figures relate to Friday’s trading activity and do not represent confirmed institutional transactions for 2 November.
The previous session’s foreign investment activity formed part of the background to Monday’s positive opening. However, the figures do not establish the direction or extent of institutional positioning during the current session. The distinction is relevant when assessing the day’s market developments, as Friday’s transactions cannot be treated as fresh buying or selling on Monday.
Delhivery Gains 7.2% As Quarterly Profitability Improves
Company-specific earnings developments also contributed to the domestic market’s positive performance on 2 November. Delhivery shares advanced approximately 7.2% after the company returned to quarterly profitability. Bank of Baroda gained around 3.5% following strong operating results, while Indian Oil Corporation advanced approximately 3% after its quarterly profit nearly tripled.
Jio Platforms also featured in the positive earnings developments, alongside strong quarterly profit growth highlighted at NTPC Green Energy. These announcements added to the domestic corporate earnings developments during the session. The individual company movements occurred alongside the broader gains in benchmark and mid-cap indices, while India VIX continued to record an increase.
Rupee Opens at ₹94.89 As Currency Uncertainty Remains Relevant
The Indian rupee opened marginally stronger at approximately ₹94.89 against the US dollar on Monday, while Asian currencies generally remained weaker against the American currency. Another development highlighted during the session was the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) substantial net short-dollar position in the forward market.
Currency movements remained relevant to the domestic market because rupee depreciation can increase foreign investors’ currency-translation exposure and raise concerns about imported inflation. Changes in imported inflation can also influence expectations surrounding interest rates and monetary policy. These developments formed part of the day’s currency-related uncertainties, although the lower crude oil prices provided some relief. The reported opening exchange rate should not be interpreted as the rupee’s final closing value.
Iran-Qatar Diplomatic Talks Push Brent Crude Towards $110
International geopolitical developments were among the important factors shaping Monday’s market environment. Iranian and Qatari officials continued diplomatic discussions on 2 November concerning a possible agreement to end the US-Israeli war involving Iran. The discussions also raised hopes of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for international oil shipments.
Brent crude declined towards approximately $110 per barrel, compared with Friday’s six-month high of around $118. The decline in crude prices followed the diplomatic developments and provided some relief to the Indian market. As a significant crude oil importer, India is exposed to changes in international oil prices through its import bill, current account deficit, currency movements, domestic fuel and transportation inflation, corporate input costs and future RBI monetary-policy considerations.
The possibility of diplomatic progress and lower oil prices remained relevant to the day’s volatility developments. However, a conclusive agreement had not been established, leaving the geopolitical situation unresolved during Monday’s trading session.
US Technology Concerns Weigh on Asian Markets as AI Spending Faces Questions
Global technology-sector uncertainty remained another important development on 2 November. Concerns surrounding substantial artificial intelligence (AI) capital expenditure by major technology companies continued to shape international market developments. Questions about whether future AI-related revenues would justify the scale of investment, the sustainability of technology valuations and the possibility of slower earnings growth remained prominent.
Asian markets reflected these concerns during Monday’s trading session. Japan’s Nikkei declined approximately 0.3% at the midday break, while Kioxia fell sharply following a weaker outlook. Taiwan’s market also traded lower, alongside Singapore’s market. These developments followed the technology-led weakness in the previous US trading session on 30 October.
The international technology-related uncertainty remained relevant to India VIX, particularly as global market developments formed part of the broader backdrop for domestic volatility expectations.
US Futures Rise 0.8% While Asian Markets Deliver Mixed Cues
Global market indicators presented a mixed picture on Monday. S&P 500 futures gained approximately 0.4%, while Nasdaq futures advanced 0.8%. The EURO STOXX 50 increased 0.3%, and DAX futures rose 0.2%. In Asia, South Korea’s KOSPI gained 1.4%, whereas Japan’s Nikkei declined approximately 0.3% at the midday break.
The gains in US equity futures and European indicators contrasted with weakness across certain Asian markets. This combination reflected differing regional market movements during the session. Alongside the continuing uncertainty surrounding technology stocks, these developments formed part of the international market conditions coinciding with the rise in India VIX.
US Manufacturing and Payroll Data Keep Economic Uncertainty in Focus
Upcoming US economic announcements also featured in Monday’s market developments. US manufacturing activity data was scheduled for release later on 2 November, while the US non-farm payrolls report was scheduled for Friday, 6 November. Both announcements were relevant to expectations surrounding American economic growth, inflation, Federal Reserve interest-rate decisions, US Treasury yields, dollar strength and emerging-market capital flows.
Market pricing cited in the morning update indicated a 72% probability of a 25-basis-point US rate increase in December. However, the manufacturing and employment figures were still upcoming announcements and had not been released during India’s trading session. Their significance on Monday was therefore associated with the economic uncertainty surrounding the forthcoming releases.
November History Shows India VIX Fell In 10 of 17 Years
Historical seasonality data showed that India VIX recorded negative returns in 10 out of 17 years during November. Its maximum positive monthly change was 21.46% in November 2021, while its average positive change stood at 12.15%. On the downside, its maximum negative change was 19.92% in November 2020, with an average negative change of 7.82%. The historical average change for November was 0.41%.
The technical rating for India VIX was Neutral on the daily timeframe. The classic pivot levels placed the pivot point at 15.15, with resistance levels at 15.84, 16.37 and 17.06, and support levels at 14.62, 13.93 and 13.40. Fibonacci resistance levels stood at 15.62, 15.91 and 16.37, while support levels were 14.69, 14.40 and 13.93. Camarilla resistance levels were 15.41, 15.52 and 15.64, with support at 15.19, 15.08 and 14.96. India VIX closed 1.31% higher at 15.50 on 2 November, despite gains across major domestic indices. The session featured developments in crude oil, US-Iran diplomacy, global technology markets, currency movements and upcoming US economic announcements. The index’s final movement reflected the day’s changing volatility expectations amid these domestic and international developments.
