Mumbai, 12 October 2026: India VIX rose by 0.87 points, or 6.05%, to close at15.23, compared with the previous close of 14.38. The volatility index opened at 14.37, touched an intraday low of 13.14 and reached a high of 15.54 during the session. The increase came as Indian benchmark indices reversed their early gains amid rising domestic bond yields, continued foreign portfolio investor outflows and escalating geopolitical tensions. A stronger rupee and easing crude oil prices provided some relief but did not prevent volatility from increasing.
India VIX Rises 6.05% as Market Volatility Increases
India VIX, which measures the stock market’s expected volatility over approximately the next 30 days using Nifty options prices, closed at 15.23, up from 14.38 in the previous session. The index’s movement indicated higher expected near-term price fluctuations, rather than establishing the direction of the next trading session.
During Monday’s session, India VIX traded between 13.14 and 15.54, while its 52-week range remained between 8.72 and 28.90. The index has gained 60.65% year to date, according to the supplied market data.
The increase followed Friday’s recovery on October 9, when the Nifty 50 rose approximately 1.30% and India VIX declined 5.89% to 14.38. Monday’s reversal in benchmark indices coincided with the volatility index moving above 15, reflecting a change in the market’s near-term volatility expectations.
Bond Yields Near 7.38% Add to Domestic Market Pressure
Indian government bond yields were a key domestic development during Monday’s session. The yield on the 10-year government bond climbed to approximately 7.37–7.38%, its highest level in three years, according to the supplied market reports.
Higher bond yields can make fixed-income securities relatively more attractive and increase borrowing costs, while also affecting equity valuations. The rise occurred alongside continued foreign equity outflows and concerns about global interest rates.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) also announced a change to banks’ cash reserve requirements. From the fortnight beginning October 16, banks will be required to maintain a minimum daily cash reserve balance equivalent to 99% of the prescribed Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR), compared with the earlier requirement of 90%. The measure was discussed alongside rising bond yields and concerns about banking-system liquidity.
Foreign Equity Outflows Reach ₹45,125 Crore In October
Foreign portfolio investor (FPI) selling remained another source of pressure on Indian equities. Cumulative net foreign equity outflows reached approximately ₹45,125 crore during the first six trading sessions of October, while total foreign equity selling in 2026 stood at around ₹3.61 lakh crore, according to the supplied figures.
These amounts represent cumulative outflows reported as of October 12 and should not be interpreted as selling recorded exclusively on Monday.
The sustained outflows coincided with uncertainty surrounding the durability of the market’s recent recovery. The session also saw losses in major companies, including ITC, State Bank of India, Bharti Airtel, Hindustan Unilever, Larsen & Toubro, NTPC, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank. Tech Mahindra was among the notable laggards. FMCG and public sector banking stocks were among the weaker sector groups, while automobiles performed relatively better and the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose by as much as 1% intraday.
Middle East Tensions and Asian Losses Add Global Risks
Geopolitical developments continued to influence global financial markets on October 12. Reports of intensified attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on Saudi Arabia, alongside attacks on two tankers over the weekend, heightened concerns about regional security and energy transportation.
The developments kept shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb region, in focus. For India, energy supply disruptions can affect crude prices, inflation, the rupee and corporate costs.
Asian equity markets also recorded notable weakness. South Korea’s Kospi fell approximately 3.6–4%, while Chinese equities declined and other regional markets delivered mixed performances. The US dollar remained close to an 18-month high as markets assessed geopolitical risks and awaited US inflation data.
US Treasury yields also remained elevated. The supplied reports placed the 10-year yield above 5.3% and the 30-year yield at around 5.6%. Higher US yields can influence global borrowing costs, currency movements and capital flows towards emerging markets.
Rupee Gains 1% Despite VIX Climbing Above 15
The rupee strengthened by approximately 1% to ₹95.74 against the US dollar on Monday, compared with ₹96.73 at Friday’s close. The move followed RBI measures intended to ease pressure on the domestic currency, including arrangements for dollar supplies to three state-owned oil companies and tighter rules governing certain foreign-exchange derivatives and hedging transactions.
Crude oil prices also eased during the session. Brent crude was reported at approximately $104.37 per barrel, while US crude stood near $91.33 per barrel. The decline followed developments involving a proposed energy-related ceasefire arrangement between Russia and Ukraine and the possibility of increased Russian diesel exports.
However, crude remained expensive, while continuing Gulf shipping risks left uncertainty surrounding energy supplies unresolved. The rupee’s appreciation and the easing of oil prices coincided with, rather than prevented, the rise in India VIX.
VIX Climbs From 14.38 as Benchmarks Reverse Gains
India VIX’s intraday movement reflected the changing conditions during Monday’s session. The market opened with relatively supportive cues, including a stronger rupee and lower crude prices, while benchmark indices initially advanced.
At approximately 9.57 am, India VIX was reported at 15.16, up 4.31%. By around 2.45 pm, the Sensex was nearly 800 points below its previous close, while India VIX had risen above 15 and gained more than 7% at that point. The Sensex had fallen by over 1,200 points from its intraday high.
The supplied market data records the closing level at 15.23, up 6.05%. Other published closing-session figures cited in the reference material differ, including 15.33, up 6.66%, and 15.4050, up 7.17%. These discrepancies mean the figures should not be treated as identical.
October History Shows Mixed India VIX Performance
Historical seasonality data shows that India VIX recorded positive returns in 9 out of 18 years during October. The index’s maximum positive October change was 26.73% in 2020, while its average positive change was 12.04%.
The maximum negative October change was -30.99% in 2013, with an average negative change of -13.66%. The average October change across the historical data was -0.81%.
These figures demonstrate that October performance has varied considerably across the years. Historical monthly movements do not establish the direction of India VIX in any particular session.
Upcoming US Inflation Data Adds October 14 Uncertainty
Market participants were also monitoring the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, 2026, alongside the start of the US corporate earnings season. Major US banks, including JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, were scheduled to report results from October 13, with further earnings announcements due later in the week.
The inflation report was expected to influence assessments of the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook, particularly amid elevated energy costs and global borrowing rates. These scheduled events formed part of the wider uncertainty surrounding Monday’s trading session.
India VIX closed at 15.23, up 6.05%, as domestic bond yields rose, foreign equity outflows continued and geopolitical concerns persisted. The rupee strengthened to ₹95.74 per US dollar, while Brent crude eased to approximately $104.37 per barrel. The US inflation report scheduled for October 14 and upcoming corporate earnings remained key developments on the calendar.
