Mumbai, 6 November 2026: India VIX surged 12.07% or 1.88 points to 17.46 at the close of Friday’s trading session, reflecting increased volatility in the Indian equity market amid a sharp sell-off in global technology stocks and widespread weakness across domestic midcap and smallcap stocks. The volatility index opened at 15.58, touched an intraday low of 14.45 and climbed to a high of 17.77 before closing higher. The previous close stood at 15.58.
The sharp rise came despite gains in the benchmark indices, with the Sensex and Nifty recovering from their opening losses. However, the weakness in broader markets, declining market breadth and steep corrections in Asian equities remained key developments during the session.
India VIX Rises 12.07% as Global Technology Sell-Off Weighs On Markets
Global equity-market weakness remained a significant development during Friday’s trading session, following a sharp overnight sell-off in US technology stocks. The Nasdaq Composite declined 5.5%, the S&P 500 fell 4.4%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 3.4% during the previous US trading session.
The decline followed concerns over Qualcomm’s weak results, high valuations of technology companies and questions surrounding the sustainability of substantial investments in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Concerns about the pace of expenditure on AI-related infrastructure and data centres also contributed to the technology-sector sell-off. The possibility of tighter AI regulations following the US midterm election results added to the uncertainty.
The developments affected global market sentiment ahead of Friday’s Asian trading session. The weakness in US equities also influenced the broader international market environment as concerns surrounding technology valuations and AI-related investments continued to feature in market discussions.
KOSPI Falls 8.8% and Nikkei Drops 5% Amid Global Sell-Off
The weakness in US technology stocks extended to Asian markets on 6 November, with South Korea’s KOSPI and Japan’s Nikkei 225 witnessing sharp declines. The KOSPI fell approximately 8%, with its decline reaching around 8.8% during the session, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped approximately 5%.
The correction reflected concerns surrounding technology valuations, AI-related investments and the wider sell-off in global technology stocks. The sharp declines across these Asian markets contrasted with the relative resilience of Indian benchmark indices during the session.
The developments formed part of the global market backdrop as Indian equities navigated the impact of overseas market weakness. The sharp movements in major Asian indices coincided with the increase in India VIX, which measures the market’s expected volatility over the next 30 calendar days based on Nifty options prices.
Sensex and Nifty Recover Despite Weak Opening On 6 November
Indian benchmark indices initially opened lower on Friday, tracking negative global cues. The Sensex declined approximately 227 points, while the Nifty 50 fell around 104 points at the opening. The Indian rupee also opened marginally weaker at ₹94.49 against the US dollar.
However, buying in selected heavyweight stocks subsequently supported the benchmark indices. By 1:36 PM, the Sensex had recovered to 80,336.05, gaining 1,026 points or 1.29%, while the Nifty 50 advanced to 24,747.40, up 211 points or 0.86%.
At around noon, the Sensex was trading at 79,797.67, up 487.66 points or 0.61%, while the Nifty stood at 24,623.35, gaining 86.75 points or 0.35%. Despite the recovery in frontline indices, India VIX continued to rise, reaching 17.05, up 9.44% at that point in the session.
Midcap and Smallcap Indices Fall Up to 1.81% As Selling Broadens
The broader domestic market remained under pressure despite the recovery in benchmark indices. At around noon, the Nifty Midcap 100 declined 1.43%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 1.81%. Sectoral weakness was also visible, with Nifty Realty dropping 2.67%, Nifty Metal declining 1.54%, Nifty Energy falling 1.38% and Nifty Media losing 1.35%.
Nifty PSU Bank declined 0.99%, while Nifty Auto slipped 0.58%. Several individual midcap and smallcap stocks also recorded substantial intraday losses. Thermax fell 17.86%, Rashi Peripherals declined 16.86%, TD Power Systems dropped 15.10% and NACL Industries lost 12.73%.
West Coast Paper declined 12.69%, Kingfa Science & Technology fell 11.82%, Astral dropped 10.85% and Apar Industries declined 10.50%.
Market breadth reflected the extent of the weakness, with 2,569 declining stocks against 1,213 advancing stocks, while 172 stocks remained unchanged at around noon. The contrast between gains in benchmark indices and losses across broader market segments remained a defining feature of Friday’s session.
Heavyweight Stocks Gain Following Strong Quarterly Results
Selected large-cap stocks recorded gains following their September-quarter earnings announcements, contributing to the recovery in benchmark indices. Mahindra & Mahindra shares advanced more than 5% after the company reported strong second-quarter earnings. Titan Company also attracted buying interest following its quarterly performance.
Bharti Airtel reported a 33% year-on-year increase in quarterly profit to approximately ₹9,015 crore, while revenue rose 16.7%. Its average revenue per user (ARPU) increased to ₹271. Titan reported consolidated quarterly profit of approximately ₹2,393 crore, representing a 114% year-on-year increase.
Other companies scheduled to announce their September-quarter results included Hindalco Industries, Bosch, Siemens, Coromandel International, Jubilant FoodWorks and Voltas. The earnings announcements contributed to stock-specific movements during the session.
Rupee Strengthens to ₹93.90 as Crude Prices Recover
The Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar during Friday’s session, reaching ₹93.90 around 2:30 PM, its strongest level since 22 April 2026. The currency’s movement was supported by softer crude oil prices, easing bond yields and renewed foreign investment inflows.
Brent crude, meanwhile, recovered partially during the Indian morning session, trading at approximately $99.91 per barrel, up around 1.65%. The recovery followed a broader decline in oil prices during the week, which had supported India’s macroeconomic outlook amid expectations of possible progress towards resolving the US-Iran conflict.
The crude oil movement remained relevant for India, which imports nearly 90% of its oil requirements. Changes in international oil prices affect the country’s import bill, inflation outlook and currency dynamics.
Cabinet Approves ₹14,500 Crore Energy Storage Scheme
Domestic policy announcements also featured during the session. The Union Cabinet approved a ₹14,500 crore viability gap funding scheme for grid-scale energy storage projects. The initiative aims to support renewable energy integration and strengthen electricity grid reliability.
Separately, the government opened bids for deepwater oil and gas exploration blocks, offering to fund up to 50% of well costs to attract investment and support domestic hydrocarbon production.
Gujarat Energy also signed a long-term agreement with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to procure up to 4 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) over 10 years, beginning in 2028.
India VIX Closes at 17.46 After Touching 17.77 Intraday
India VIX ended Friday’s session at 17.46, gaining 1.88 points or 12.07%. The index opened at 15.58, matching its previous close, before moving between an intraday low of 14.45 and a high of 17.77.
Its 52-week range stood between 8.72 and 28.90. The index recorded a year-to-date return of 87.24%. Its November seasonality data showed that India VIX had delivered negative returns in 10 out of 18 years. The maximum positive change for November was 21.46% in 2021, while the maximum negative change was 19.92% in 2020. The average positive and negative changes stood at 12.58% and -7.82%, respectively, with an overall average change of 1.25%.
India VIX closed at 17.46, up 12.07%, on 6 November 2026, after touching an intraday high of 17.77. The session featured sharp declines in global technology stocks, weakness across Asian markets and domestic midcap and smallcap selling, alongside a recovery in the Sensex and Nifty.
