Mumbai, November 6: Indian equity markets witnessed strong buying across heavyweight banking and financial stocks on November 6, with private sector lenders leading sectoral gains as benchmark indices extended their winning streak to a seventh consecutive session. Consumer durables and pharmaceutical stocks also attracted investor interest, while media, realty, energy and defence shares remained under pressure.
The Nifty Private Bank index was the top sectoral performer, surging 3.2 percent, followed by the Nifty Financial Services index, which gained 2.6 percent. The Nifty Bank advanced 2.3 percent, while the Consumer Durables and Pharma indices rose 1.7 percent and 1.2 percent, respectively.
The rally in banking stocks was driven by strong buying in large private sector lenders, which also featured prominently among the biggest contributors to the Nifty 50’s advance.
Private Banks, Financial Services Lead Rally
Private sector banking stocks spearheaded the market recovery, with ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank among the biggest Nifty 50 gainers.
ICICI Bank shares jumped 4.7 percent, while HDFC Bank and Axis Bank advanced 3.7 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively. Kotak Mahindra Bank also attracted buying interest, rising 2.8 percent, while Yes Bank gained 6 percent, extending its gains for the third consecutive session as investors tracked developments surrounding the reinstatement of Rs 8,415 crore worth of additional tier-1 (AT-1) bonds written off by the lender in March 2020. A report on Wednesday said the YES Bank AT-1 Bond Holders Association had sought clarity on the payment schedule following the expiry of a deadline set by a debenture trustee. Bondholders are seeking a definitive timeline for the repayment of their investments after the Supreme Court ruled in their favour mid-October.
The Nifty Financial Services index climbed 2.6 percent, reflecting strength beyond traditional banking stocks. SBI Life Insurance gained 2.8 percent, while the broader financial services space benefited from renewed investor appetite for heavyweight financial counters.
The Nifty PSU Bank index, however, underperformed its private sector counterpart, rising just 0.6 percent.
Consumer Durables, Pharma and Auto Stocks Advance
Consumer-facing stocks also participated in the rally. The Nifty Consumer Durables index rose 1.7 percent, supported by gains in Titan Company and other jewellery and lifestyle counters.
Titan shares advanced 3.4 percent as jewellery stocks attracted buying interest on Dhanteras, an auspicious occasion for purchasing gold and other precious metals. Kalyan Jewellers gained 5.5 percent, while consumer electronics and power distribution equipment maker Havells India advanced 5.6 percent after the company received a Letter of Comfort from Uttar Pradesh for fiscal incentives for a proposed R&D centre involving an investment of Rs 879 crore.
Pharmaceutical stocks remained firm, with the Nifty Pharma index gaining 1.2 percent. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries rose 1.7 percent, while Glenmark advanced 4.4% after better than expected US sales. Sai Life Sciences rose 12% after rise in profit.
The Nifty Auto index rose 0.8 percent. Mahindra & Mahindra was among the biggest Nifty 50 gainers, jumping 5 percent following its quarterly results, as investors focused on resilient SUV demand and its electric vehicle business despite a weaker tractor outlook. Bajaj Auto gained 1.3 percent, while Hyundai Motor India advanced 0.4 percent.
IT, Metal and FMCG Stocks See Gains
The Nifty IT index gained 0.4 percent, extending its two-session advance to nearly 2.9 percent, as investors looked for opportunities in Indian technology companies following the global selloff in AI-linked stocks. Infosys and HCL Technologies were among the stocks supporting sentiment.
Metal stocks also edged higher, with the Nifty Metal index gaining 0.7 percent. Hindalco Industries advanced 2.19 percent, while Tata Steel rose 2.36 percent.
The Nifty FMCG index added 0.7 percent, while the Oil and Gas index gained 0.6 percent.
Media, Realty, Energy and Defence Stocks Under Pressure
Selling pressure persisted in select sectors despite the sharp rally in benchmark indices. The Nifty Media index was the worst performer, declining 1.5 percent, followed by the Nifty India Defence index, which fell 0.9 percent.
The Realty index flatlined, while the Energy index also flatlined. Tata Power was among the notable individual losers, falling 3.3 percent during the session.
