New Delhi, July 2, 2025 – India’s coal sector has reported robust numbers and strong growth in the first quarter of the current financial year (Q1 FY26). The total production from captive and commercial coal mines has reached 15.57 million tonnes (MT) in June 2025, as per the data from the Ministry of Coal.

The critical rise demonstrates durable structural improvement along with improved supply to critical sectors and reduced imports. The improved efficiency and better mine utilization have resulted from policy initiatives by the ministry.

For the quarter ending June 2025, coal output from these mines increased by 16.39% year-over-year, while coal dispatches rose by 13.03%, indicating robust demand and improved operational efficiency.

June Performance Highlights

  • Coal Production (June 2025): 15.57 MT
  • Coal Dispatches (June 2025): 17.31 MT

These numbers reflect a steady upward trajectory, underscoring the coal sector’s pivotal role in powering key industries such as power generation, steel, and cement.

Infrastructure and Policy Boost

In a major development during the month, mine opening permission was granted for Utkal A Mine, which has a Peak Rated Capacity of 25 MT. This move is expected to contribute significantly to domestic supply expansion.

Additionally, vesting orders for three new coal blocks were issued in June, bringing the total number of coal blocks allocated to over 200. This continued allocation underscores the government’s push to ensure a secure and adequate coal supply to critical sectors.

A Push Towards Self-Reliance

The Ministry of Coal attributes this growth to:

  • Enhanced mining capacities
  • Streamlined operational strategies
  • Consistent policy support

These efforts are aligned with the broader goal of reducing import dependency and strengthening India’s position as a self-reliant energy producer.

Three-Year Growth Trend

There has been a consistent increase in coal production, with three consecutive years of growth, as reported by the Ministry. This strong quarterly performance not only marks a significant step towards energy security but also reflects the resilience and expansion capacity of India’s coal ecosystem.
