Mumbai, Aug 4: Shares of Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) are trading sharply lower on Tuesday as of writing, even as the state-owned non-banking financial company reported a robust set of first-quarter earnings backed by strong growth in its lending business. The stock is down 2.27 per cent, or Rs 2.79, at Rs 120.11 as of writing against the previous close of Rs 123.00. IREDA opened the session at Rs 121.29 and touched an intraday high of Rs 121.60 before slipping to a low of Rs 118.19, as selling pressure builds through the day. The volume- weighted average price stands at Rs 120.45.
The order book shows a mild tilt towards buyers at this point in the session, with total buy quantity at 21,86,991 shares (55.12 per cent) against a sell quantity of 17,80,382 shares (44.88 per cent), even as the stock trades lower.
On a weekly basis, IREDA has shown a mixed trend. The stock climbed from around Rs 120 levels on 28 July to touch Rs 121 on 29 July, before slipping to a low of nearly Rs 119 by 31 July. It then staged a sharp recovery, climbing steadily over the following sessions to close near Rs 123 before today’s decline pulled it back down to the Rs 120 mark. The recent volatility comes even as the company’s fundamentals showed continued strength.
In a communique sent to both the BSE and the NSE, the Navratna company informed exchanges that its net profit for the June quarter rose 36.8 per cent year-on-year, with profit after tax climbing to Rs 337.5 crore. The company attributed the growth to robust expansion in its lending business, as disbursements to solar, wind and other clean energy projects gathered pace through the quarter.
IREDA, which functions as a renewable energy-focused non-banking financial company under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, has been steadily scaling up its loan book as India pushes ahead with its clean energy transition targets. The company plays a key role in financing renewable energy projects across the country, including solar parks, wind farms and hybrid energy installations, and holds Navratna status among India’s central public sector enterprises.
Despite the strong earnings performance, the stock’s decline during trade suggests investors may be booking profits or awaiting further clarity on other operational metrics. Market participants are watching commentary on asset quality, the pace of loan disbursements and margin trends through the session. Updates on the company’s fundraising plans, seen as crucial to supporting its ambitious loan book growth targets, will also be closely tracked as IREDA pursues further portfolio expansion through the rest of the fiscal year.
The company’s shares have seen heightened volatility in recent sessions, reflecting broader investor caution around interest-rate-sensitive NBFC stocks even as underlying business fundamentals remain strong. Analysts tracking the renewable energy financing space note that sustained disbursement growth, coupled with prudent asset quality management, will be key factors determining the stock’s trajectory in the near term. The pullback in the counter also comes amid a broader wait-and-watch approach among investors towards public sector NBFCs, which have seen sharp swings this earnings season on account of provisioning and asset quality concerns.
IREDA has been at the forefront of India’s push to finance the renewable energy sector, and its quarterly performance is often viewed as a bellwether for financing activity in the clean energy space. The company continues to pursue an ambitious growth strategy, aiming to significantly scale up its loan book over the course of the current fiscal year, backed by strong demand from renewable energy developers across solar, wind and other segments. The government has set ambitious renewable capacity addition targets for the country, and financing agencies such as IREDA are expected to play a central role in channelling credit towards the sector over the coming years.
Going forward, the stock’s movement is likely to remain closely tied to the broader trajectory of interest rates, the pace of renewable capacity additions in the country and the company’s ability to maintain healthy asset quality even as its loan book expands rapidly. Investors will also track any commentary from management on capital raising plans, given the scale of funding required to support the company’s growth ambitions in the renewable energy financing space.
