Mumbai, October 13: Indian equity benchmarks staged a sharp recovery on Tuesday, with the Sensex jumping more than 1,100 points and the Nifty 50 closing above 22,700, as a rally in information technology stocks following HCL Technologies’ better-than-expected September-quarter earnings lifted investor sentiment. The gains came despite concerns over rising retail inflation, elevated crude oil prices and the possibility of further interest rate hikes, which had kept markets cautious at the opening.

The BSE Sensex climbed 1,109.10 points, or 1.54%, to close at 73,033.78, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 358.60 points, or 1.60%, to settle at 22,721.95. Market breadth remained positive, with 2,303 shares advancing, 1,711 declining and 162 remaining unchanged.

The benchmarks had opened on a subdued note as investors assessed inflationary pressures, geopolitical tensions and the outlook for monetary policy. However, buying in technology stocks gathered momentum through the session, helping the indices extend their gains.

IT Stocks Lead Market Rally

The Nifty IT index surged 5.2%, emerging as the strongest sectoral performer. HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tech Mahindra and Infosys featured among the biggest gainers on the Nifty 50, alongside Shriram Finance.

HCL Technologies’ September-quarter net profit rose 21.2% year-on-year, surpassing market expectations. However, the company maintained a cautious outlook for annual revenue growth amid geopolitical uncertainty and concerns about artificial intelligence-led disruption.

The results nevertheless encouraged investors to return to beaten-down technology stocks. The sector has faced pressure this year over moderating earnings growth and the potential impact of AI on traditional software services. TCS also gained, adding to the positive momentum across IT shares.

Most Sectors End In The Green

Buying extended across most sectors, with all sectoral indices except energy and pharmaceuticals ending higher. The Nifty Metal, PSU Bank, Auto, Consumer Durables and Realty indices each gained around 1%, reflecting improved risk appetite across cyclical and domestic-facing stocks.

Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Max Healthcare, Power Grid Corporation and Maruti Suzuki were among the biggest laggards on the Nifty 50.

The broader market also participated in the recovery, though gains were more modest than those in the benchmark indices. The Nifty Midcap index rose 1%, while the Nifty Smallcap index advanced 0.1%.

Inflation, Crude Oil Remain Key Concerns

India’s retail inflation accelerated to 5.54% in September, higher than expected and approaching the Reserve Bank of India’s 6% upper tolerance limit. The increase has strengthened concerns about further monetary tightening, particularly as the Iran war and weak monsoon conditions add to price pressures.

Brent crude remained above $100 per barrel despite easing during the session, keeping concerns over India’s import bill, inflation and the rupee in focus. The RBI has also tightened rules on rupee non-deliverable derivative contracts as part of measures to support the domestic currency amid elevated oil prices and foreign capital outflows. Foreign investors sold Indian shares for a 12th consecutive session on Monday, taking their October outflows to around $4.9 billion.

Tuesday’s rally offered relief after recent market weakness, but the sustainability of the recovery will depend on corporate earnings, crude oil prices, foreign investor flows and the evolving outlook for interest rates.
