Nifty, Sensex end the day on a mixed note; Godfrey Phillips shares down by 17.17%

Indian equity markets ended the first day of the year, 2026, on a mixed note note. Nifty 50 ended the day, up by 0.065%. Sensex ended the day, down by 0.038%. Markets some volatility today.

All the broad market indices, except for smallcap indices, ended the day in green today. Small cap stocks saw some selling pressure. Among sectoral indices, Nifty FMCG Index was the top loser today. It ended the day, down by 3.17%. Nifty Auto index was the top gainer among sectoral indices today. It ended the day, up by 1.03%. Some IT stocks also gained today. Nifty IT index ended the day, up by 0.76%.

Cigarette stocks lose heavily after government imposes additional excise duty

Top 3 gainers at Nifty 50 today were Bajaj-Auto, Shriram Finance and NTPC. Top 3 losers were ITC, Tata Consumer and Dr. Reddy’s. ITC shares ended the day, down by 9.69%. This, after government imposed additional excise duty on cigarettes. Stock of another cigarette manufacturer, Godfrey Phillips, ended the day down by 17.17%.

Market breadth was positive

Market breadth was positive today. 1682 stocks gained today. 1448 stocks declined. This was an advance-to-decline ratio of more than 1 on the first day of the year. 66 stocks touched 52- week high at NSE today. 62 stocks touched 52-week low.
