Nifty, Sensex start the day in green; Coal India shares up by more than 1%

Indian equity markets have started the day in green today, 2nd January, 2025. At 10 a.m. IST, Nifty 50 is up 116.30 points or 0.44%. Sensex is up by 392 points or 0.46%.
All the broad market indices are in green today. The gains are broad-based and market wide. Market expectation of volatility has also increased. Nifty VIX index is up by 1.52%. Among sectoral indices, Nifty Auto index is the top gainer at this time. It is up by 1.03%. Nifty FMCG index is the top loser at this time. It is down by 1.04%.
Top 3 gainers at Nifty 50 at this time are Coal India, BEL and Maruti. Top 3 losers are ITC , Dr Reddy’s and Bajaj-Auto. Coal India shares are up by 1.79% at this time. ITC shares are down by 3.88% at this time. Dr Reddy’s shares are down by 0.99%.
Market breadth strongly positive
Market breadth is strongly positive at this time. 1834 stocks are gaining at NSE. 933 stocks are declining. That is an advance-to-decline ratio of almost 2. 68 stocks have touched 52-week high at NSE by this time today. 27 stocks have touched 52-week low.
ITC, Idea and Hindustan Copper are among shares at this time that are seeing maximum trading activity in terms of value. The impact of higher excise duty on cigarettes that the government announced yesterday, on ITC and Godfrey Phillips shares, is being seen today too.
US government postpones higher tariffs on furniture and other upholstered products
Meanwhile, US government has postponed the increase in import tariffs on furniture and other upholstered items for a year. It said that talks with trading partners are ongoing and therefore the hike has been postponed. But the decision indicates that the US government is now seeing the adverse impact of tariffs on US citizens in terms of increase in prices. Therefore, it has become more cautious and less aggressive in imposing higher tariffs.
