Nifty’s Sectoral Map Just Got Bigger; 34 Indices Now Track India’s Economy

Mumbai, June 17: The National Stock Exchange’s index services subsidiary, NSE Indices Limited, has launched 11 new sectoral indices, expanding its sectoral coverage to a total of 34 indices. The newly introduced indices are Nifty Power, Nifty Capital Goods, Nifty Telecommunications, Nifty Construction, Nifty Consumer Services, Nifty Commercial & Transport Services, Nifty Retail, Nifty Hospitals, Nifty NBFC, Nifty Housing Finance and Nifty Insurance.
According to NSE Indices, the expanded suite offers more comprehensive and granular coverage across both established and emerging sectors of the Indian economy, enhancing the breadth and depth of sectoral representation available to market participants. The exchange said the new indices are expected to serve as benchmarks for asset managers and as reference indices for passive investment products, including exchange traded funds (ETFs), index funds and structured products — areas that have seen rapid growth in India’s capital markets in recent years as investors increasingly seek sector-specific exposure rather than broad-market bets.
The move reflects a broader trend toward granularity in passive investing, where fund houses look to construct products tracking specific themes such as power, retail, NBFCs, or housing finance, rather than relying solely on broad benchmark indices. Sectors like NBFC, Housing Finance and Insurance, in particular, have grown significantly in market capitalisation and investor interest over the past few years, and dedicated indices could pave the way for more targeted ETF and index fund launches in these spaces.

NSE Indices Ltd, formerly known as India Index Services & Products Ltd (IISL), is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NSE and provides a range of indices and index-related services for the capital markets. The company owns and manages a portfolio of indices under the Nifty brand, including the benchmark Nifty 50, and its offerings span broad-based benchmark indices, sectoral indices, strategy indices, thematic indices and customised indices. It also maintains fixed income indices based on Government of India securities, corporate bonds, money market instruments, and hybrid indices.
Several investment products based on Nifty indices have been developed both in India and overseas, including index-based derivatives traded on the NSE and NSE International Exchange IFSC Ltd (NSE IX), along with numerous index funds and ETFs. The flagship Nifty 50 remains the most widely tracked and traded benchmark for Indian capital markets, and Tuesday’s expansion adds further depth to the broader Nifty index ecosystem that underpins much of India’s passive investment landscape.
