NTPC shares are sharply up today. At 3:10 p.m. IST, 2nd January, 2025, its shares are up by 4.67%, trading at Rs 352. Nifty 50 index is up by 0.66% at this time.

Company signs agreement with Rosatom and EDF for nuclear power

The company has signed an agreement with Russia’s Rosatom and France’s EDF for pressurized water nuclear reactor power plants in India. This may have given a boost to sentiments regarding the stock. The government has targeted 100 GW nuclear electricity capacity by 2047. NTPC may get an advantage in nuclear energy after signing these collaboration agreements.

The government recently allowed private sector and foreign investment in nuclear energy. Liability clauses with regard to leaks in nuclear power plants have also been relaxed. NTPC has a 50:50 joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) called Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam Ltd (ASHVINI). This joint venture is building the Banswara atomic power plant in Rajasthan.

Stock was an underperformed in 2025

In the past 5 days, NTPC’s shares have gained 8.31%. The stock was an underperformed in 2025. In the past 1 year, its stock gained 4.14%. Nifty 50 index gained 8.80% in the past 1 year. NTPC’s shares underperformed the Nifty 50 index by around 4% in the past one year.

The stock is currently trading at 12-month trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of around 14.37. Given the expected increase in demand for power in the foreseeable future and NTPC’s strong presence in the power sector, the stock is not trading at a high P/E multiple.
