ONGC shares gained 2.46% on the last day of the year

ONGC shares gained today. The stock closed the day, 31^st December, 2025 up by 2.46% at Rs 240.46. Nifty 50 ended the day, up by 0.74%. Sensex ended the day, up by 0.64%. ONGC’s stock was the second top gainer at Nifty 50 today.

ONGC shares underperformed in 2025

In 2025, ONGC shares gained only 1.48%. Nifty 50 index gained 10.17% in the year. ONGC shares underperformed the Nifty 50 index by around 11% this year. Nifty Oil & Gas index gained around 12% in 2025. ONGC is a constituent of Nifty Oil & Gas index with a weight of 14.19%.

ONGC is an oil and gas exploration and production company.  Oil prices remained subdued all through the year 2025. At this time today, WTI crude for February delivery is trading at $58.11 per barrel. Brent crude is trading at $61.49 per barrel. Higher oil prices are beneficial for ONGC.

OPEC+ to not increase supply in the first 3 months of 2026

OPEC+ has said that it will not increase its oil production in the first three months of 2026. This may provide some support to oil prices. If global economic slowdown worsens then it may put downward pressure on oil prices. The coming year may see ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. This war has been going on for four years now. If the ceasefire happens then supply of cheaper Russian oil to the world may end. Due to the sanctions of Europe and USA, Russia is selling its oil at lower prices to many countries.

Stocks that make up Nifty Oil & Gas index are currently trading at an average price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 11.38. ONGC shares are trading at 12 month trailing P/E ratio of 8.28.
