Mumbai, Aug 10: Fuel prices were mixed across major Indian cities on Monday, with petrol and diesel rates remaining unchanged in New Delhi, Gurgaon and Chandigarh, while several cities recorded marginal increases or cuts. Patna saw the sharpest rise in both petrol and diesel prices among the listed cities, while Bengaluru recorded the steepest decline. Thiruvananthapuram continued to have the highest petrol and diesel prices in the list, whereas Chandigarh had the lowest rates.
Crude oil prices climbed on Monday as uncertainty persisted over when the Strait of Hormuz would reopen, with Iran saying an agreement with Oman on new shipping lanes was nearing completion but maintaining that further conditions must be met before the strategic waterway can resume normal operations. Brent crude rose 91 cents, or around 1.1%, to $84.46 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate gained 61 cents, or 0.8%, to $78.79.
The latest move came after both benchmarks declined more than 7% last week as hopes of a deal between Iran and Oman.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the agreement with Oman was in its final stages. The absence of direct negotiations between Washington and Tehran adds another layer of uncertainty around the timing of any reopening.
The geopolitical risks have also intensified elsewhere in the region. Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group claimed an attack on Saudi Aramco’s Jazan refinery, while Saudi Arabia has strengthened its regional security ties.
For India, the oil rally remains an important market trigger. A sustained rise in crude prices could increase the country’s import bill, put pressure on the rupee and raise input costs for companies. The impact could be particularly relevant for oil-sensitive sectors.
Higher crude prices could benefit upstream oil producers if elevated prices translate into stronger realisations. Shares of companies such as Oil India and ONGC could therefore stand to benefit.
With Brent now back above $84 a barrel, investors will closely track developments around the Strait of Hormuz.
