Mumbai, August 21: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across major Indian cities on Friday, although Chandigarh saw a sharp decline in both fuel rates, while Thiruvananthapuram recorded the biggest increase. Petrol prices stood at ₹102.12 per litre in Delhi and ₹111.21 in Mumbai, while diesel was priced at ₹95.20 and ₹97.83 per litre, respectively.
Oil prices dipped on Friday but remained on track for a second consecutive weekly gain as the unresolved US-Iran conflict continued to disrupt crude supplies from the Middle East. Brent crude futures dipped 0.3% to $93.4 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude slipped 0.55% to $86.3.
Brent has gained more than 7% over the week, while WTI is up more than 8%, with both benchmarks touching their highest levels since July 24. The latest rally reflects growing concerns that the prolonged conflict could keep supplies from major oil-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, constrained for longer.
The earlier peace deal between the US and Iran expired this week without a fresh push to restart negotiations. US President Donald Trump has also threatened severe economic consequences for countries supporting Tehran, while US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would impose its toughest sanctions yet on Iran. The prospect of intensified economic pressure has further clouded hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough that could restore oil flows.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a key concern for the global energy market. Shipping traffic through the waterway was just nine vessels on Wednesday, well below pre-war levels. Before the conflict, the strait carried oil shipments equivalent to roughly one-fifth of global consumption, making any prolonged disruption a major threat to global supply.
The market is increasingly pricing in the possibility that supply disruptions could persist, keeping crude prices elevated in the near term. Brent had climbed to a one-month high of $94.71 in the previous session before easing on profit-taking.
For oil-importing economies such as India, the sustained rise in crude prices is a key risk. Higher energy costs can put pressure on inflation, corporate margins and the rupee while increasing the country’s import bill. Any further escalation in the US-Iran conflict or deterioration in flows through the Strait of Hormuz could keep pressure on Indian markets and the broader economy.
