Mumbai, August 27: Petrol and diesel prices remained different across major Indian cities, with Delhi recording the lowest rates for both fuels among the cities covered, while Hyderabad had the highest prices. Petrol was priced at 102.12 a litre in Delhi compared with 115.69 in Hyderabad, while diesel rates ranged from 95.20 a litre in Delhi to 103.82 in Hyderabad. Fuel prices vary across states and cities primarily because of differences in state-level taxes and local levies.

Oil prices extended their decline on Thursday, with Brent crude heading for a fourth straight session of losses as expectations of progress in talks involving Iran and Qatar raised hopes that disruptions to supplies through the Strait of Hormuz could ease. Brent crude futures fell 0.4% to $87.4 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude declined 0.5% to $81.8.

Qatar’s prime minister is due to travel to Iran on Thursday to revive diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict, while Iran and Oman are working on details of an agreement concerning the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway carried around one-fifth of global oil and natural gas consumption before the war, but flows have since fallen to about one-quarter of pre-war levels, according to ship-tracking data.

Despite the recent decline, supply concerns remain. The Middle East conflict has damaged refineries, while Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have also reduced diesel exports. U.S. distillate inventories, including diesel and heating oil, fell by 2.2 million barrels in the week to August 21 to 103.4 million barrels — the lowest level recorded for this time of year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Kolkata recorded a higher petrol price of 113.51 a litre, while Hyderabad had the highest rate among the six cities at 115.69 a litre. The differences in retail fuel prices across cities are largely due to variations in state-level taxes and local levies.

Hyderabad had the highest diesel price among the six cities at 103.82 a litre, around 8.62 higher than Delhi. Differences in diesel prices across cities are primarily due to variations in state taxes and local levies.
