Mumbai, July 22: Petrol and diesel prices today, July 22, remained largely stable across major Indian metro cities and state capitals, with most markets reporting no change in retail fuel rates. Petrol was priced at ₹102.12 per litre in New Delhi, ₹111.21 in Mumbai, ₹113.51 in Kolkata and ₹107.76 in Chennai, while diesel rates stood at ₹95.20, ₹97.83, ₹99.82 and ₹99.55 per litre, respectively. However, some cities, including Bengaluru, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar, witnessed daily price revisions.
Oil prices extended their gains on Wednesday, with Brent crude rising 1.3% to $92.2 a barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude climbing 1.2% to $85.4, as renewed U.S. strikes on Iran and growing risks to shipping routes heightened concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies.
The latest gains came after oil prices settled at a five-week high on Tuesday following U.S. strikes on targets in southern and western Iran, while Iran attacked U.S. facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. The continued escalation has raised concerns over the potential for a wider disruption to oil flows from the Middle East.
Supply risks have also increased around the Red Sea after Iran-aligned Houthi forces threatened vessels carrying Saudi oil through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and announced a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia. Three tankers carrying Saudi crude to China and India turned around in the Red Sea on Tuesday and headed towards the Suez Canal after receiving warnings from the Houthis, potentially adding significant time and costs to shipments to Asia.
The Strait of Hormuz has also seen a sharp decline in traffic since a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran collapsed earlier this month, making the Bab el-Mandeb route increasingly important for Saudi crude exports. Meanwhile, oil supply uncertainty has been compounded by disruptions at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium’s Black Sea terminal, which stopped receiving Kazakh oil after suspending loadings following attacks on oil tankers.
Commodity strategists said the longer the suspension of Kazakh oil shipments continued, the greater the likelihood that the country would be forced to reduce upstream production. The analysts also pointed to tensions in the Black Sea as another source of uncertainty for global oil supplies.
The market, however, received some bearish signals from U.S. inventory data. Figures from the American Petroleum Institute showed that U.S. crude and distillate inventories increased last week, while gasoline stockpiles declined. Investors are awaiting official inventory data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration for further clues on demand and supply conditions in the world’s largest oil consumer.
