Mumbai, August 11: Fuel prices remained largely stable across major Indian cities on Tuesday, with petrol and diesel rates seeing only modest changes in most markets. While petrol prices were unchanged in Delhi, Kolkata, Gurgaon and Lucknow, sharper declines were recorded in Thiruvananthapuram and Patna. On the diesel front, prices remained steady in several major cities, although Thiruvananthapuram and Patna saw notable reductions.
Oil prices held near one-week highs on Tuesday after surging more than 5% in the previous session, as fading prospects of a U.S.-Iran peace agreement raised concerns over the continued disruption of crude flows through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude futures were flat at $87.72 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was also flat at $82.14 a barrel.
This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump demanded compensation from Iran for damage caused during wars, attacks and protests, adding another hurdle to negotiations aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump later said the U.S. Navy had control of the waterway and had cleared it of Iranian mines, further highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the route, through which a significant share of global oil supplies normally passes.
Supply concerns were compounded by developments elsewhere in the region. Saudi Aramco postponed the restart of its 400,000-barrel-per-day Jazan refinery to August 30 after the Houthis claimed attacks on the facility. Analysts said risks around both the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb remain elevated, with potential restrictions or further incidents likely to keep insurance costs high, lengthen shipping routes and constrain energy flows in the near term.
Data from Barclays showed that crude oil and refined-product net exports through the Strait of Hormuz averaged only 3 million barrels per day in the week ended August 7, down sharply from 4.4 million bpd a week earlier. The disruption is particularly significant for Asian economies, while higher crude prices could also add to inflationary pressures globally and complicate monetary policy decisions. Iraq, meanwhile, raised the September official selling price for Basra Medium crude to Asia by $2.50 a barrel.
For India, the renewed rise in crude prices is a key market concern given the country’s heavy dependence on imported oil. Higher energy costs can widen the import bill, put pressure on the rupee and raise input costs for several industries. The Indian currency is also expected to come under pressure from the oil rally, increasing the importance of potential Reserve Bank of India intervention.
With the U.S.-Iran negotiations showing little sign of an immediate breakthrough, crude prices are likely to remain sensitive to developments around the Strait of Hormuz. For Indian equities, sustained oil prices near current levels could limit gains and keep investors focused on energy costs, currency movements and the potential impact on corporate margins.
