Mumbai, Aug 12: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely steady across major Indian cities on Wednesday. Petrol prices were unchanged in Delhi and Kolkata, while Mumbai saw a marginal increase and Chennai recorded a decline. Diesel rates followed a similar trend, with no change in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, even as select cities witnessed small increases or cuts.

Crude oil prices extended their gains on Wednesday amid fading hopes of a U.S.-Iran peace deal and fresh attacks on shipping vessels. The rise in oil prices comes despite a sharp increase in U.S. crude inventories, with markets focused more closely on the possibility of sustained disruption around key shipping routes.

Brent crude futures rose 0.9% to $89.7 a barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 1% to $84. Both benchmarks had settled more than $1 higher on Tuesday, clocking their highest closing levels since July 31. Oil prices had also jumped around 5% on Monday.

The latest gains were driven by growing doubts over the prospects of a peace agreement between Washington and Tehran.

Iran’s top security official said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless Washington accepted Tehran’s conditions for ending the conflict.

The rally in crude was partly tempered by signs of higher supply in the United States.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration expects disruptions to Middle East crude supplies of around 600,000 barrels per day to continue through the end of 2027, highlighting the potential for geopolitical risks to keep a floor under oil prices.

For India, the sustained rise in crude prices remains a key concern as the country imports a large share of its oil requirements. Higher oil prices can increase pressure on the rupee, widen the trade deficit and raise input costs for fuel-intensive industries, while also complicating the inflation outlook.

With Brent crude now approaching the $90-a-barrel mark, domestic equity investors are likely to keep a close watch on oil prices, particularly for their impact on aviation, paints, chemicals, logistics and other sectors sensitive to energy costs. At the same time, upstream oil producers could benefit from higher crude realizations.

Here is a city-wise breakdown of petrol and diesel prices across India.
