Mumbai, July 20: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely stable across India’s major cities on Monday, with no changes reported in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and several other key markets. However, a few cities witnessed marginal revisions, with petrol prices rising by up to 97 paise and diesel by as much as ₹1.02 per litre in select state capitals, while Noida and Patna saw slight reductions.
Crude oil prices surged on Monday, with Brent crude climbing above $90 a barrel for the first time in more than a month.
Brent crude futures rose as much as 2.4% to $90.3 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 2.2% to $84.3 a barrel. The rally extended last week’s sharp gains, when Brent advanced 15.9% and WTI climbed 15.5%, marking their biggest weekly increases since April and early March, respectively.
The latest surge followed an intensification of hostilities over the weekend. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said two oil tankers exploded in the southern Strait of Hormuz after sailing through what it described as an unsafe route.
Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz—a chokepoint that handles around one-fifth of the world’s oil trade—remained subdued over the weekend. The United States has also stepped up enforcement of a naval blockade on Iranian ports, while Iran has threatened vessels that do not comply with its directives.
Analysts said the market may not yet be fully pricing in the potential impact of prolonged disruptions to crude supplies.
Analysts estimated that every one million barrels per day of supply disruption could add roughly $5 to $7 per barrel to oil prices. They also cautioned that global inventories are at their lowest levels in five years.
Here’s a city-wise look at the latest petrol and diesel prices across metro cities and state capitals.
