Mumbai, July 29: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely stable across major Indian cities on Wednesday, with rates witnessing mixed movements in several state capitals and urban centres. While fuel prices were unchanged in New Delhi and Mumbai, Jaipur recorded the sharpest increase in both petrol and diesel rates, while Thiruvananthapuram and Bengaluru also saw notable hikes. Hyderabad continued to have the highest petrol and diesel prices among the cities tracked, while Chandigarh recorded the lowest diesel rate.
Oil prices climbed more than 4% on Wednesday as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran raised concerns over potential disruptions to energy supplies, while a decline in U.S. crude inventories added further support to prices.
Brent crude futures rose 4.3% to $87.7 a barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 4.2% to $82.6 a barrel.
The latest price surge followed joint U.S.-Saudi strikes in Iraq and the interception of Iranian ballistic missiles targeting U.S. forces in the Middle East. The developments dampened expectations of a swift de-escalation in the Persian Gulf and renewed concerns over the stability of oil supplies from the region.
Saudi Arabia said its forces, coordinating with U.S. Central Command, carried out targeted strikes against Iran-backed groups in Iraq following drone attacks targeting the kingdom’s oil infrastructure. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also said they had launched ballistic missiles at a U.S. air base and military Central Command centre in Jordan.
The geopolitical developments were accompanied by signs of tightening supply in the United States. U.S. crude inventories fell by around 3.3 million barrels in the week ended July 24, according to data from the American Petroleum Institute cited by market sources. Official inventory data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration is due later on Wednesday.
Market sentiment was also supported by expectations that OPEC+ could pause planned increases in oil production for three months from October. The producer group is expected to complete the scheduled return of barrels following voluntary output cuts before potentially halting further increases.
The combination of heightened Middle East tensions, falling U.S. crude inventories and the possibility of tighter OPEC+ supply is likely to keep oil markets volatile. For major oil-importing economies such as India, a sustained rise in crude prices could increase the import bill, put pressure on the rupee and add to inflationary risks.
