Mumbai, July 30: Petrol and diesel prices remained largely stable across major Indian cities on Thursday, July 30, with only marginal day-on-day changes recorded in select markets. Petrol prices were unchanged in Delhi, Mumbai, Gurgaon and Bengaluru, while diesel rates also held steady in several key cities. Thiruvananthapuram recorded the sharpest increases in both petrol and diesel prices among the cities tracked, while Bhubaneswar and Lucknow saw notable declines in fuel rates.
Oil prices eased on Thursday after a sharp rally in the previous session, as tankers continued to move through Middle Eastern waters despite escalating tensions in the region, easing some concerns over an immediate disruption to global crude supplies.
Brent crude futures fell 1.3% to $89.6 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined 1% to $83.6 a barrel. The declines came after Brent surged 7.91% and WTI jumped 6.56% in the previous session, marking one of the sharpest price spikes since the start of the U.S.-Iran war.
Shipping data showed that 39 commodity vessels passed through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait into the Red Sea on Tuesday, the highest number since July 19. However, only a few vessels continued to transit the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route through which around a fifth of the world’s oil and gas previously flowed.
Market participants remained focused on the widening conflict and its implications for energy supplies. U.S.-Saudi strikes on Iran-backed forces in Iraq, Iranian attacks involving U.S. bases and tankers, and threats by Yemen’s Houthi group to disrupt shipping in the Red Sea have added to risks around key oil transit routes. Saudi Arabia is also seeking to build a coalition to protect Red Sea shipping from Houthi attacks.
Analysts said continued oil flows through alternative routes could gradually reduce Iran’s leverage over the Strait of Hormuz, although overall volumes remain below normal levels. The evolving security situation in the Middle East is expected to keep crude prices volatile, with traders closely monitoring tanker movements, disruptions to shipping lanes and diplomatic efforts to contain the conflict.
