Mumbai, September 21: Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged across major Indian cities on Monday, September 21, with fuel rates continuing to differ from state to state due to variations in local taxes and levies. Petrol was priced at ₹102.12 per litre in Delhi, while diesel retailed at ₹95.20 per litre. In Mumbai, petrol was available at ₹111.21 per litre and diesel at ₹97.83 per litre.
Oil prices fell more than 2% on Monday, September 21, reversing an earlier rise after Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis launched missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh. Brent crude futures were down 2.3% at $101.5 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude fell 2.4% to $97.9. Both benchmarks touched their lowest levels since September 10.
The decline came as investors focused on the possibility of diplomatic efforts to ease the US-Iran conflict this week, with the United Nations General Assembly taking place in New York. US President Donald Trump has said he would be open to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, while Iran has conveyed conditions for restarting negotiations through mediators.
The latest attacks nevertheless kept concerns over Middle East energy supplies in focus. The Houthis said they had targeted “sensitive” sites in Riyadh and an Aramco facility in Yanbu, a key oil-export hub. Saudi Aramco has responded to disruptions along its East-West pipeline by increasing shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, helping Saudi exports recover to more than 4 million barrels per day in September so far, compared with 2.4 million bpd in August, according to Kpler data cited by Reuters.
Despite the recent decline, crude remains above $100 a barrel, leaving oil prices vulnerable to further geopolitical developments. Analysts said Middle East oil flows had remained stronger than expected despite the disruptions, with total flows averaging 17.1 million bpd over the previous 10 days. Saudi shipments through the Strait of Hormuz had also increased sharply, suggesting that the recovery in physical supplies is helping offset some of the disruption caused by the conflict.
For India, the fall in crude prices offers some relief because the country imports most of its oil requirements. However, with Brent still above the $100-a-barrel level and the conflict continuing to threaten regional energy infrastructure, elevated crude prices remain an important risk for inflation, the rupee and corporate margins. The direction of oil prices is likely to remain closely tied to developments around the US-Iran conflict, Saudi exports and shipping through key regional routes.
