Nifty Fell Over 100 Points Amid Weak Rupee and Rising Crude
After yesterday’s strong close, Nifty extended gains in the first half on monthly derivative expiry, touching an intraday high of 24,089. However, the momentum reversed sharply in the latter half, with Nifty sliding more than 200 points from its peak to settle at 23,913, down 118 points. NSE cash market turnover rose by 7% compared to the previous session.
Within the Nifty constituents, Adani Enterprises, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, and Tech Mahindra led the gains, while Apollo Hospitals, Wipro, and Bharti Airtel featured among the key laggards.
Sectorally, barring Nifty Metal, FMCG, and Auto, all indices closed in the red. Consumer Durables, Financial Services, Private Banks, and Realty sectors led the declines.
Broader markets showed resilience, diverging from the headline index. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 gained 0.54% and 0.37%, respectively. Market breadth remained positive for the seventh consecutive session, with a BSE advance-decline ratio of 1.07, underscoring sustained appetite for mid- and small-cap stocks.
Indian rupee snapped its three-day winning streak, with a sharp 45-paise depreciation. The local currency buckled under heavy pressure driven by a weakening Asian currency basket, a shift toward global risk aversion, and a spike in crude oil prices following US military strikes.
From a technical perspective, the earlier breakout zone of 23,800–23,850 is expected to act as immediate support, followed by 23,600. On the upside, 24,100 remains a key near-term resistance level.
