Company denies reports of government seeking $30 billion compensation in KG6 basin case
The company has officially denied the reports that appeared yesterday that government has raised a claim of US $30 billion against Reliance Industries and BP in the ongoing arbitration proceedings in KG-6 basin case. Reliance has said that the report is factually incorrect and the government’s claim is of only $247 million. The company said that it has already reported this government claim in its financial reports.
In the ongoing arbitration proceedings, the Government is claiming compensation for the lost revenues due to shortfall in production in D1 and D3 fields of KG-6 basin. A joint venture of Reliance Industries and BP operated these fields under a production sharing contract with the government. Reliance Industries is claiming that the shortfall in production happened due to geological surprises and such surprises during production and exploration of gas are not new or uncommon. Reliance is also saying that as per the production sharing contract signed with the government, the company and its joint venture partner have the right to first recover all the development expenditures incurred at the fields before profit sharing begins with the government.
This dispute has been going on since 2011. Hearings at the arbitration council were recently concluded. Judgment of the arbitration panel is likely to come in early 2026. Any of the parties can challenge the decision of the arbitration panel in the Supreme Court. Production at D1 and D3 fields ended in 2020.
