Mumbai, August 26: Indian equities saw a mixed sectoral performance on Wednesday, with information technology and infrastructure stocks leading declines while financials, private banks and metals emerged as pockets of strength. Ten of the 16 major sectoral indices ended lower as investors rotated between sectors amid concerns over IT costs, global technology valuations and fiscal 2027 earnings prospects.
IT Stocks Lead Sectoral Decline
The Nifty IT index was the worst-performing sectoral gauge, falling 1.5%, as investors remained cautious about the potential impact of proposed changes to US H-1B visa fees and ahead of Nvidia’s earnings.
Infosys was among the biggest Nifty losers, while Tech Mahindra also declined sharply. The weakness came as the proposed $103,265 fee on new H-1B visas raised concerns about higher employee costs for Indian IT companies, which derive a substantial portion of their revenue from the US market.
Investor caution ahead of Nvidia’s results also weighed on sentiment toward technology stocks. Analysts have said Indian IT stocks remain closely linked to spending trends and developments in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Infrastructure, Telecom Stocks Under Pressure
The Nifty Infrastructure index fell around 1%, adding to the pressure on the broader market. Power Grid Corp was among the notable losers in the sector and featured among the major Nifty laggards.
Bharti Airtel also declined, while weakness in other heavyweight stocks compounded the pressure on the benchmarks.
Reliance Falls, Energy Stocks Weaker
Reliance Industries declined 1.4%, making the oil-to-telecom conglomerate one of the biggest individual drags on the headline indices.
The fall came with crude oil prices dropping below $86 a barrel. Lower oil prices are generally favourable for India because they can reduce the country’s import bill and ease inflationary pressures. However, the inability of the benchmarks to capitalise on the positive oil-price trigger highlighted the cautious tone prevailing among investors.
The broader energy and oil-and-gas segments also ended lower, contributing to the day’s sectoral weakness.
Banks Provide Support
Financial stocks bucked the broader trend, with the Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Private Bank indices gaining between 0.5% and 1%.
Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank were among the strongest Nifty performers, while HDFC Life also ended higher. Gains in heavyweight financial stocks provided some support to the benchmarks and helped offset part of the selling in technology stocks.
PSU banks also remained firm, with the Nifty PSU Bank index rising around 0.8%, indicating interest in financial stocks across both private and state-owned lenders.
Metals Gain
Metal stocks were another bright spot, with the Nifty Metal index rising around 1%. JSW Steel was among the top Nifty gainers, while Hindustan Zinc also advanced after receiving a positive brokerage view.
The strength in metals helped reinforce the broader rotation toward selected cyclical stocks, even as investors remained cautious about large-cap technology counters.
Auto, FMCG, Realty Stocks Decline
Several domestic-facing sectors also ended lower. Auto, consumer durables, FMCG, oil and gas and realty indices declined between 0.5% and 0.9%.
The weakness indicated that selling pressure was not confined to IT and infrastructure, with investors trimming positions across several sectors despite the favourable backdrop of softer crude prices.
Smallcaps Outperform
The broader market remained comparatively resilient. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index gained 0.8%, while the Midcap 100 index ended flat.
Varun Beverages fell 3.8% after analysts flagged execution risks associated with the company’s foray into the alcohol segment. The stock’s decline underscored the stock-specific nature of trading, with investors appearing to rotate positions based on expectations for fiscal 2027 earnings.
Overall, the day’s sectoral action pointed to a clear divergence: large-cap IT, infrastructure and select heavyweight stocks dragged the benchmarks lower, while banks, metals and smallcaps attracted buying interest.
