Mumbai, October 14: Information technology, energy, oil and gas and FMCG stocks outperformed the broader market on Wednesday, while pharmaceutical, financial services, auto, metal and realty shares came under pressure as Indian equity benchmarks ended lower in volatile trade. The Nifty IT index extended its rally after a strong previous session, supported by optimism over quarterly earnings, but gains in technology stocks were insufficient to offset weakness across several other sectors.

The BSE Sensex fell 251.89 points, or 0.34%, to close at 72,781.89, while the NSE Nifty 50 declined 99.25 points, or 0.44%, to settle at 22,622.70. Elevated crude oil prices and persistent foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows continued to weigh on investor sentiment.

IT stocks extend rally; Infosys, TCS, Tech Mahindra gain

Information technology stocks remained among the market’s strongest performers, extending gains after the Nifty IT index rallied 5.2% on Tuesday. The previous session’s surge followed better-than-expected quarterly earnings from HCL Technologies, reinforcing hopes that earnings momentum could support the sector.

Infosys (up 2.4%), TCS (2%) and Tech Mahindra (2%) featured among the Nifty 50’s top gainers on Wednesday as investors continued to favour select technology stocks. The sector’s relative resilience stood out in an otherwise weak market, although investors remained focused on upcoming earnings announcements and management commentary for signs of sustained growth.

Tata Elxsi also attracted buying interest, rising 5.7% after reporting higher September-quarter profit, supported by its transportation and media businesses. The stock’s performance highlighted the importance of company-specific earnings developments in driving sectoral action.

Energy, FMCG advance; Coal India among gainers

Energy, oil and gas, media and FMCG stocks advanced around 0.5-1%, offering some support to the benchmark indices. Nestle India (up 3.7%) and Tata Consumer Products (2.9%) featured among the Nifty 50’s leading gainers, reflecting relative strength in consumer-oriented stocks. Coal India also advanced 2% and its arm Bharat Coking Coal gained 5.3% after increasing basic prices for certain grades of raw coking coal sold to the non-regulated sector.

However, the rise in crude oil prices remained a concern for the broader market. Brent crude climbed towards $107 per barrel amid geopolitical tensions and concerns over potential supply disruptions. Higher oil prices can raise India’s import bill, add to inflationary pressures and increase input costs for oil-dependent industries, making the outlook challenging for several cyclical sectors.

Pharma, financials, auto and metal stocks decline

Pharmaceutical stocks were among the worst performers, with the Nifty Pharma index registering a sharp decline. Zydus Lifesciences fell 0.7% after a US drug regulator concluded an inspection at its Ahmedabad manufacturing plant with five observations.

Financial stocks also faced selling pressure. Shriram Finance, HDFC Life Insurance, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance and SBI Life Insurance featured among the Nifty 50’s leading laggards. Private banking stocks declined alongside auto, metal and realty shares, with these sectors falling between 0.5% and 1.7%.

Bank of Baroda was another notable loser, declining 4% after being named in a $15 billion lawsuit filed by businessman BR Shetty in the Bombay High Court.

Outlook: Earnings and crude oil remain in focus

Investors will track further September-quarter results, crude oil movements and foreign fund flows for direction. FPIs extended their selling streak to 13 consecutive sessions on Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors continued to provide support through net purchases.

With oil prices elevated and foreign outflows persisting, sustained strength in IT and defensive stocks may not be enough to trigger a broad-based recovery. Sectoral performance is likely to remain selective, with earnings announcements and company-specific developments determining individual stock movements.
