Mumbai, October 16: Information technology stocks led sectoral gains on Friday, helping Indian equity benchmarks extend their recovery for a second consecutive session. The Nifty IT index surged 3.9% as investors continued to buy technology shares following better-than-expected quarterly earnings and a global sell-off in artificial intelligence-linked stocks that created opportunities for value buying.

The Nifty 50 rose 148.80 points, or 0.65%, to close at 23,146.15, while the Sensex gained 413.66 points, or 0.56%, to settle at 74,729.27. Buying in IT, media and metal stocks supported the benchmarks, while declines in FMCG, oil and gas and pharmaceutical shares limited the advance.

IT Stocks Lead

The Nifty IT index was the best-performing sectoral index, rising 3.9%. Tech Mahindra jumped 8.5%, while Wipro gained 6%. TCS and Infosys were also among the top Nifty 50 gainers, reflecting sustained buying in large-cap technology stocks.

The rally followed quarterly earnings from major IT companies, which helped ease concerns about demand and the impact of artificial intelligence on traditional technology services. Tech Mahindra reported better-than-expected September-quarter revenue, while Wipro’s revenue also beat expectations.

The Nifty IT index gained 11.7% over the week, its strongest weekly advance in 18 years. TCS, Infosys, HCLTech and Tech Mahindra were among the Nifty 50’s biggest weekly percentage gainers, rising between 13.4% and 18.2%.

Media, Metal, PSU Bank Stocks Advance

Media and metal shares also ended higher, alongside gains in public sector banks and infrastructure stocks. Buying across these sectors reflected an improvement in risk appetite after the recent market sell-off.

Telecom stock Bharti Airtel and automaker Mahindra & Mahindra were among the other notable Nifty 50 gainers, rising around 2.7% and 2%, respectively. Telecom stock Vodafone Idea rose 0.6% ahead of the upcoming Jio Platforms IPO, which is expected to draw investor attention to the sector.

FMCG, Oil & Gas Among Laggards

FMCG, oil and gas, and pharmaceutical stocks were among the sectoral laggards. Weakness in these pockets offset some of the gains in technology and other cyclical stocks.

InterGlobe Aviation, BSE Ltd, Max Healthcare, Tata Consumer Products and Jio Financial Services were among the top Nifty 50 losers. InterGlobe Aviation, which runs airline IndiGo, fell 2% after the Centre told the Supreme Court that it had finalised rules to regulate airfare pricing. Jio Financial Services shares fell 1.3% despite a surge in second-quarter adjusted operating profit. BSE fell 2% after the regulator’s decision to settle expiring stock and index derivatives contracts using volume-weighted average prices from the final 30 minutes of regular trading, reversing its earlier closing-auction session.

The divergence between sectors indicated that Friday’s recovery was led by specific heavyweight stocks rather than a uniform rise across the market.

Midcaps Slip, Smallcaps End Flat

The Nifty Midcap index declined 0.12%, while the smallcap index ended largely unchanged. The relatively muted performance of broader-market stocks contrasted with the strength in large-cap IT shares.

Despite the rebound, elevated crude oil prices and concerns that persistent global inflation could keep interest rates higher for longer remain risks for equities. Investors will also watch upcoming earnings from major banks and the Jio Platforms IPO for cues on market direction.
