Mumbai, October 5: Most sectoral indices ended higher on Monday as Indian equities snapped a four-session losing streak, with easing crude oil prices and fading expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike improving risk appetite. Financials led the recovery, while FMCG, media, consumer durables, infrastructure, oil and gas, telecom and realty stocks also gained. Pharma was the only major sectoral index to end lower.
Financials Lead Sectoral Rally
Financial stocks led the sectoral recovery, with the Nifty Bank and financial services indices gaining around 0.5% each, while the PSU Bank index rose 1%. The gains came after a series of positive September-quarter business updates from lenders and financial companies, helping the sector rebound after the recent selloff.
Punjab National Bank rose 2.5% after reporting 14.8% growth in global advances during the September quarter, while Bank of Baroda gained 0.9% after its quarterly advances grew 18%. Bajaj Finance rose 2.3% after reporting an 11% year-on-year increase in new loans booked during the quarter. Mahindra & Mahindra Finance also gained 2% after its September-quarter disbursements rose 22%.
FMCG, Media And Realty Gain
The Nifty FMCG index gained 1.8%, led by ITC, which jumped 5.1% after a broker upgraded the stock to ‘Buy’ from ‘Sell’. The upgrade provided a boost to the broader FMCG pack.
Media, consumer durables, infrastructure, oil and gas, telecom and realty stocks also advanced, with most sectoral indices gaining between 0.5% and 2%. FSN E-Commerce, the parent company of Nykaa, rose 4.5% after projecting strong September-quarter revenue growth, citing strength in its fashion and beauty businesses.
IT Flatlines Despite Accenture
The IT sector flatlined despite Fed fears declining and Accenture forecasting better-than-expected revenue growth, with its outlook providing some reassurance about technology spending.
Analysts described Accenture’s performance as a neutral-to-positive read-through for Indian IT companies. However, the gains were selective, with Infosys and HCL Technologies still facing selling pressure. TCS which is set to declare results later this week rose 1.9%.
Pharma Lone Major Drag
Pharma was the only major sectoral index to end in the red, bucking the broader market recovery, with Sun Pharmaceutical Industries declining 1.2%. Overall, 13 of the 16 major sectoral indices ended higher.
The broader market also participated in the rebound, with the Nifty midcap and smallcap indices rising around 0.5% each. However, the recovery remained uneven, with 1,991 shares advancing against 2,297 declines.
The sectoral recovery came as easing crude prices and lower expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike improved risk appetite. Investors will now track September-quarter business updates, crude prices and foreign fund flows to assess whether the rebound can sustain.
