Mumbai, 11 July 2025: Siemens Ltd has secured significant orders from Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MAHA-METRO), valued at a combined ₹773 crore, for the Nagpur Metro Rail Project Phase 2. The contracts focus on providing advanced signalling and telecommunication technologies for the expanded metro network.
Project Scope and Technology
The scope of work for Siemens involves the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of advanced infrastructure, specifically:
- Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling systems: CBTC is a modern railway signalling system that uses telecommunications between trains and track equipment for traffic management and infrastructure control. Unlike traditional fixed-block signalling, CBTC systems continuously track the exact position of trains and communicate this data in real-time. This allows for a more efficient and safe management of railway traffic, enabling trains to run closer together while maintaining safety margins.
- State-of-the-art telecom solutions: The project is expected to be executed over approximately 42 months. The awarded contract covers 32 metro stations spread across a 43.8-kilometre network, and also includes the augmentation of the existing Phase 1 infrastructure.
Enhancing Metro Operations and Strategic Implications
The implementation of CBTC signalling technology is expected to significantly enhance the Nagpur Metro system’s operational efficiency. Key benefits include:
- 100% train punctuality: By continuously monitoring train locations and speeds, CBTC allows for precise control of train scheduling.
- Optimised headways: The system reduces the safe distance between consecutive trains, increasing the frequency of service and boosting line capacity. This is crucial for urban centres experiencing increased ridership.
- Energy efficiency: The system can optimise train movement, leading to more efficient energy usage, aligning with sustainability goals.
- Enhanced safety standards: CBTC includes Automatic Train Protection (ATP), which can automatically stop a train if it exceeds speed limits or passes a red signal, mitigating the risk of human error.
Rajeev Joisar, Head of Siemens Mobility Business, stated, “The project will contribute significantly to the sustainable urban development of Nagpur. It also reinforces Siemens’ capability to deliver integrated mobility solutions that combine automation, digitalisation, and sustainability.”
Strategic Implications
This order solidifies Siemens’ position as a key player in India’s burgeoning metro infrastructure sector. It aligns with the country’s broader push for sustainable and smart urban transport solutions, offering significant opportunities for technology providers like Siemens. For Nagpur, the advanced signalling and telecom systems are vital for improving connectivity to suburban areas and satellite towns, which are expected to benefit over 10 lakh residents. The improved metro service will facilitate easier commutes for thousands working in industrial estates and other areas, reducing traffic congestion and pollution. This contract also highlights India’s commitment to modernising its public transport networks with cutting-edge global technologies.
About Nagpur Metro Phase 2
