Mumbai, October 27: Indian equity benchmark indices ended flat on Tuesday, October 27, as gains in pharmaceutical, realty and media stocks offset losses in information technology, oil and gas, and private banking shares. The market remained volatile on expiry day, with investors weighing elevated crude oil prices near a six-month high against the outlook for US monetary policy. The Sensex declined 8.08 points, or 0.01%, to close at 73,598.67, while the Nifty 50 fell 3.45 points, or 0.02%, to settle at 22,749.75.

Broader Markets Outperform Benchmarks

Broader markets outperformed the frontline indices, with the Nifty Midcap index rising 1% and the Nifty Smallcap index surging 2.7%. Market breadth remained positive, as 2,807 shares advanced, 1,334 declined and 179 remained unchanged.

Among Nifty 50 constituents, Tata Consumer Products, Bharti Airtel, Trent, BSE Ltd and Power Grid Corporation were the biggest gainers. Grasim Industries, State Bank of India, Coal India, TCS and Asian Paints led the losses.

Media, Realty and Pharma Stocks Rally; IT Drags

Sectorally, the Nifty Media index climbed 3.6%, while the Realty and Pharma indices gained around 2% each. The Auto index rose 1.4%. In contrast, the IT, Oil and Gas, and Private Bank indices each slipped around 0.5%, limiting gains in the benchmark indices.

Weakness in information technology stocks remained a key drag amid concerns over the sector’s growth outlook, while gains in select heavyweight stocks helped keep the broader market resilient.

Crude Oil Near Six-Month High Keeps Investors Cautious

Crude oil prices remained a key concern, with Brent crude hovering near $116 a barrel, close to a six-month high. Attacks on Saudi Arabia have heightened concerns over potential supply disruptions and clouded hopes of an immediate easing of tensions in the Middle East.

Since India imports most of its crude oil requirements, sustained high prices could increase the import bill, add to inflationary pressures, strain the fiscal position and weigh on corporate profitability.

Fed Policy Decision, FPI Outflows in Focus

Investors also remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision on Wednesday, October 28. Market participants were assessing the outlook for interest rates and the possibility that a hawkish signal could lift US bond yields and the dollar, putting pressure on emerging-market capital flows.

Foreign portfolio investors sold Indian shares worth Rs 1,462 crore on Monday, taking their October outflows to around $4.75 billion and their year-to-date selling to a record $32.56 billion, according to provisional data.
