Mumbai, October 27: Sectoral stocks traded mixed on Tuesday, October 27, as gains in media, realty, pharmaceuticals, automobiles and defence shares contrasted with weakness in information technology, oil and gas, and private banking stocks. The Nifty Media index climbed 3.6%, while the Realty and Pharma indices gained around 2% each. The Auto index rose 1.5%, whereas the IT, Oil and Gas, and Private Bank indices each declined around 0.5%. The Sensex and Nifty 50 ended flat in a volatile monthly expiry session.
Tata Consumer Products led the Nifty 50 gainers, rising 6.8% after reporting better-than-expected September-quarter profit, supported by steady demand for packaged foods and beverages. Bharti Airtel, Trent, BSE Ltd and Power Grid Corporation were also among the index’s leading gainers.
The broader market outperformed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap index rising 1% and the Nifty Smallcap index surging 2.7%. Market breadth remained positive, with 2,807 shares advancing, 1,334 declining and 179 remaining unchanged.
HAL, BEL, Paras Defence Shares Rise on Defence Procurement Push
Defence stocks attracted buying interest after the Defence Acquisition Council approved capital acquisition proposals worth approximately Rs 2.12 lakh crore. Shares of Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL, up 1.7%), Bharat Electronics (BEL, 1.4%), Paras Defence and Space Technologies (2.5%), BEML (7.9%), and Astra Microwave Products (4.8%) rose on Tuesday.
The approvals put defence manufacturers in focus as investors assessed the potential business opportunities arising from fresh military procurement plans. The defence sub-index rose 1.8%.
Infosys, TCS Weigh on IT Stocks
Information technology shares remained under pressure, with the Nifty IT index falling 0.3%. Infosys declined 0.3% after cutting its FY27 revenue growth guidance on Friday, citing weakness in its key North American market despite reporting better-than-expected revenue.
TCS was also among the major Nifty 50 laggards, declining 1.5%. Investors remained cautious about the outlook for technology spending and global demand, with the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision scheduled for tomorrow adding to uncertainty around financial conditions.
Crude Oil Near Six-Month High Puts Oil and Gas Stocks Under Pressure
Oil and gas shares remained muted as Brent crude hovered near $116 a barrel, close to a six-month high. Attacks on Saudi Arabia heightened concerns about potential supply disruptions and clouded hopes of an immediate easing of tensions in the Middle East. Refining giant Reliance Industries declined 0.5%. Oil, gas and chemicals logistics firm Aegis Logistics sank 7% despite a 45.1% year-on-year jump in September-quarter net profit, as revenue fell 3.5%.
Elevated crude prices pose a challenge for Indian oil marketing companies and businesses exposed to energy costs. A sustained rise could increase India’s import bill, fuel inflation and squeeze corporate margins, although the impact varies across refiners, fuel retailers and other energy companies.
Media, Realty, Pharma and Auto Stocks Advance
The Nifty Media index rose 3.6%, while the Realty and Pharma indices gained around 2% each. The Auto index advanced 1.5%, indicating broader buying interest beyond the frontline benchmarks. Tata Motors rose 3.9% after the takeover bid for Italian truck maker Iveco crossed the 80% acceptance threshold. The company now holds 89.42% of Iveco’s common share capital.
Tata Consumer Products was among the standout individual gainers, while Trent and Bharti Airtel also supported the Nifty. On the losing side, Grasim Industries, State Bank of India, Coal India, TCS and Asian Paints featured among the major Nifty 50 laggards.
Fed Decision and Foreign Investor Outflows in Focus
Investors remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision on Wednesday, October 28. Markets were watching for signals on the interest-rate outlook, as a hawkish stance could lift US bond yields and the dollar, potentially weighing on emerging-market equities and foreign portfolio flows.
Foreign portfolio investors sold Indian shares worth Rs 1,462 crore on Monday, according to provisional data. Their October outflows had reached around $4.75 billion, while year-to-date selling stood at a record $32.56 billion.
