Mumbai, Aug 7: Indian benchmark indices extended their losses in afternoon on Friday as weakness in private banking and financial stocks outweighed gains in information technology and automobile shares. Rising crude oil prices, mixed global cues and caution ahead of key U.S. jobs data also kept investors on the sidelines.
The BSE Sensex was down 0.55% while the Nifty 50 declined 0.29%. Market sentiment remained subdued despite resilience in select sectors, with investors awaiting quarterly earnings from heavyweights including State Bank of India (SBI), Titan Company and Hindalco Industries later in the day.
Private Banks Lead Market Decline
Financial stocks remained the biggest drag on the benchmarks, with the Nifty Private Bank index falling 0.7%, while the Nifty Bank declined 0.5%.
The weakness followed the Reserve Bank of India’s draft proposals to tighten norms for certain revolving credit products offered by non-bank lenders, triggering selling pressure in financial counters.
IT, Auto Stocks Defy Broader Weakness
The broader market found some support from information technology and automobile stocks, which emerged as the day’s best-performing sectors.
The Nifty IT index advanced 1%, while the Nifty Auto index gained 1.4%, as investors rotated into sectors viewed as relatively defensive amid global uncertainty. Buying in select large-cap technology and automobile stocks helped limit the benchmarks’ losses.
Corporate earnings continued to drive stock-specific action, with investors positioning themselves ahead of results from several index heavyweights due later in the session.
Market Breadth Weakens
The broader market reflected the cautious mood, with declining stocks marginally outnumbering advancing ones.
On the NSE, 1,912 stocks traded lower, compared with 1,790 advances, indicating broad-based selling across sectors. Meanwhile, the India VIX, often referred to as the market’s fear gauge, climbed 12.5%, signalling a rise in investor caution and expectations of higher near-term volatility.
Global Cues Keep Investors Cautious
Global sentiment remained mixed as investors tracked developments in the Middle East and awaited the U.S. non-farm payrolls report, a key indicator that could influence the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.
Brent crude continued to trade above $83 per barrel after renewed uncertainty over plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz revived supply concerns. Higher oil prices remain a headwind for India, the world’s third-largest crude importer, as they could fuel inflation and widen the current account deficit.
With global uncertainties persisting and the earnings season at its peak, investors are expected to remain focused on stock-specific triggers, institutional flows and macroeconomic developments for further market direction.
