Mumbai, October 16: Confusion over whether Diwali falls on October 20 or 21 this year has confused investors for months. Most Indian households are celebrating Diwali on the 20th. However, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, for Diwali Lakshmi Puja, and again on Wednesday, October 22, for Balipratipada.

The tradition of Muhurat Trading, which means “auspicious hour,” is considered a symbolic session for prosperity. Historically, the market has performed well during this session, with the Sensex closing higher in 14 of the last 18 Muhurat trading days.

Muhurat Trading Scheduled For Afternoon

A special one-hour Muhurat Trading session will be held on October 21 from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM to mark the beginning of the new year, Samvat 2082. Trading will be allowed for investors in all market segments, including equities, derivatives, currencies, and commodities, with any trade modifications permitted until 2:55 PM. This is unlike recent years, where Muhurat Trading mostly happened in the evening session.

Although the stock market is called on the 21st, the auspicious window for Lakshmi Puja falls on the evening of October 20. On this day, most households will celebrate Diwali. However, investors can use the next day for the ‘auspicious hour’ of Muhurat trading.
