Indian Equities Post Best Weekly Gain in Nearly Six Months
Wall Street ended the last week with a sharp reminder of concentration risk. Semiconductor and high-growth technology shares sold off heavily, and defensive sectors offered only partial cushioning. Macroeconomic pressure and doubts over artificial intelligence (AI) spending left the major indexes sharply divided.
Investors questioned whether enormous AI capital expenditure can deliver near-term profits, and chipmakers and tech firms led the decline. The Nasdaq Composite fell 4.5% for the week, and the S&P 500 lost about 2%. The Dow Jones outperformed, gaining 0.7% on strength in value heavyweights.
Semiconductors extended their losing streak to eight sessions, the longest since the 2008 financial crisis. Scrutiny of the debt and financing structures behind AI infrastructure build-outs accelerated selling in mega-cap tech.
The U.S.–Iran conflict continued to strain supply chains and key trade routes, and attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure heightened supply concerns. Brent crude held in triple digits, near $107 a barrel, lifting energy stocks while adding to macroeconomic worries.
Bond volatility stayed elevated after hotter-than-expected inflation data stoked fears of prolonged high interest rates. The 10-year Treasury yield closed near 5.097%, after earlier touching a multi-year high
The Indian equity market posted a strong recovery last week, marking its strongest weekly gains in nearly six months. Frontline equities rebounded strongly, corporate earnings were positive, and supportive macroeconomic interventions helped domestic indices shrug off early global pressures to close significantly higher
Proactive liquidity interventions and defensive measures by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) helped the domestic currency mount a sharp recovery, appreciating back toward Rs 94.96 per dollar.
IT emerged as the standout weekly performer, surging 11.7% on stellar corporate earnings and strong foreign institutional interest. Auto sectors posted solid gains of ~3.7%, tracking improving domestic demand expectations and positive trade optimism.
Large private bank results were largely in line with or better than expected, which should help improve sentiment.
U.S. stock futures rose , led by Nasdaq futures, as investors cautiously returned to technology shares. A heavy earnings calendar, including logistics, defence and automotive companies, offers a fresh test of sentiment.
Indian equities look set for a flat to mildly positive start in the absence of strong global triggers.
