Vodafone Idea shares seeing some profit booking after gaining at the start of the day

Reports that Government may soon give relief to the company on its AGR dues

Vodafone Idea shares are showing price movement after reports that government may provide relief to the company with regard to its AGR dues. These relief measures may include giving the company a moratorium of 4 to 5 years on payment of its AGR dues. Another relief measure may be reassessment of its AGR dues based solely on its operational revenues.

Telecom companies including Vodafone Idea had challenged the Department of Telecom’s policy of calculating AGR dues of telecom companies on the basis of both operating and non-operating revenues. So even the interest earned on the deposits that telecom companies hold in banks were included as revenue while calculating the spectrum & licensing fee that these companies have to pay to the government. The government recently told Supreme Court that it is willing to reassess the AGR dues of telecom companies based solely on their operational revenues.

Vodafone Idea’s AGR dues at around Rs 83,000 crore

Vodafone Idea’s existing Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues with the government stand at around Rs 83,000 crore. AGR dues refer to dues on spectrum charges and fee that telecom companies have to pay to the government for the spectrum that they use.

If these relief measures come, then Vodafone Idea will also be able to raise additional capital for meeting its expansion and network upgradation needs. The company has lagged behind rivals Jio and Bharti Airtel in rolling out its 5G network.

On the expectation that a relief by government is due, Vodafone Idea shares have gained 13.95% in the past 5 days. Year-to-date (YTD) in 2025, the stock has gained 44.82%. Much of these gains have come from August onward. Nifty 50 index has gained 9.58% YTD in 2025. Vodafone Idea shares have outperformed the Nifty 50 index by more than 34% this year. Nifty Midsmall IT & Telecom index has lost 7.33% YTD in 2025. Vodafone Idea has a 6.41% weight in the index.
