New Delhi, September 25, 2025 — ABB India today made a commitment of more than ₹140 crore to enhance and upgrade its Low Voltage (LV) motors production facility in India. The investment will be used for capacity addition, facility upgrade, warehouse modernisation, and office upgradation.

The company states that the target capacity expansion of around 23 % over its present capacity should be achieved by 2029.

Launch of IE5 Ultra-Premium Efficiency Motors

ABB launched its IE5 ultra-premium efficiency range of motors—the first of its kind motors to be released in India. These motors are constructed upon proven induction motor technology, do not use rare-earth metal, and are specially customised for Indian industrial conditions.

With the ability to run smoothly under both Direct-On-Line (DOL) and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) regimes, the IE5 motors support power ratings between 45 kW and 1000 kW and are capable of heavy-duty applications across industries like metals, cement, textiles, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, and paper.

ABB asserts that the IE5 series achieves a maximum of 40% less energy losses than IE3-class motors, thus improving return on investment, decreasing total cost of ownership, and increasing equipment lifetime.

Leadership Perspective and Broader Impact

Stefan Floeck, President — IEC Low Voltage Motors at ABB, said this investment is not just a matter of increasing capacity; it is the company’s vision for long-term positioning of India as a manufacturing hub of the world.

“With growing demands for energy-efficient motors, we are designing solutions that enable customers to beat leaner and cleaner,” he said.

At the same time, Sanjeev Arora, President of Motion Business & IEC Low Voltage Motors, ABB India, highlighted that the design philosophy combines established induction technology with ultra-premium efficiency—without relying on rare-earth materials.

Technology & Efficiency Advances

This Indian launch follows ABB’s worldwide drive for more efficient, magnet-free motor solutions. Indeed, ABB just enhanced its IE5 synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) offering to smaller frame sizes (90, 100, 112), taking the range down to 0.75 kW — all without the need for magnets or rare-earth components.

The extended SynRM range continues to provide around 40 % reduced energy loss compared to IE3 designs, with specific models having payback periods in less than six months.

Outlook and Significance

By integrating infrastructure investment with product innovation, ABB adds substance to its 75-plus-year history in India while setting new standards in energy-efficient industrial electrification. The company’s initiative supports India’s wider goals of industrial decarbonisation, bolstered domestic manufacturing capacity, and less reliance on strategic raw materials.
